🌿 Southern Oregon Grant Opportunities for Landowners & Community Organizations!

Last week, we shared valuable grant information for Josephine County residents looking to improve wildfire preparedness on their properties. We’re also highlighting funding opportunities available in Jackson County!

The Jackson County Soil and Water Conservation District’s Community Conservation and Education Grant supports eligible organizations working on projects that promote responsible stewardship of our local natural resources.

🌱 Grant details:

💰 Up to $10,000 per eligible project
📅 Application period: October 19 – November 20, 2026
🤝 Eligible applicants include nonprofits, government entities, Tribal governments, and educational institutions serving Jackson County.

The forest remembers🌲

Did you know that some of North America’s forests were shaped for generations by Indigenous land stewardship?

Long before modern forestry, Indigenous peoples used cultural burning to care for the land, encourage the growth of important plants, support wildlife, and maintain healthy, diverse ecosystems.

Today, tree rings and ancient fire scars still hold clues to this history. And Indigenous communities are helping lead efforts to bring these traditional practices back.

🌿 A powerful reminder this Indigenous Peoples’ Day: a healthy forest isn’t always one untouched by people. Sometimes, it’s one cared for through generations of knowledge, respect, and reciprocity.

The forest isn't just something we inherit. It's something we have a responsibility to care for.

Looking Out for Our Neighbors

As a small, family-owned and operated tree service business, Specialized Arbor Services knows how much it means to have people you can count on. Our work brings us into people's yards and lives, and we care about the families who call this community home.

That's why we support Measure 17-128. We have attached a copy to this newsletter for your convenient review.

When a fire or medical emergency happens, the person needing help could be your neighbor, a customer, or someone in your own family. Having trained emergency responders ready around the clock is something we want for everyone in Williams.

Measure 17-128 would support our local fire district's staffing, volunteer training, equipment, and emergency medical services. With the current levy and one-time grant funding ending, this measure would help keep essential care available when our neighbors need it most.

We know every dollar matters to families and small businesses. For a property assessed at $200,000, the proposed levy would mean an additional $140 a year, or about $11.67 a month, over the expiring levy. We believe keeping emergency responders ready is worth that investment.

A little help is available for some Josephine County homeowners looking to reduce wildfire fuels around their homes.

Josephine County Firewise and the Oregon State Fire Marshal are offering financial assistance for defensible space work in Merlin, Williams, Takilma and O’Brien, the Redwood Avenue area of Grants Pass, and Selma.

Eligible homeowners may receive up to $2,500 toward approved work. Three qualified contractor bids are required, and the work must be approved before it begins.

Applications are due by November 20, 2026, but funding is limited and applications will be handled as they are received.

If you live in one of these areas and have been meaning to tackle some of that fuel reduction around the house, it may be worth taking a look at the program while funding is available.
