šŸ”§ MAINTENANCE MONDAY

Is your computer running slower than it used to?

You don’t always need a new computer. Sometimes your PC just needs a little maintenance.

A few things you can do today:

šŸ’¾ Free up storage — A nearly full drive can slow things down.
🧹 Clean out dust — Dust buildup can cause overheating and performance problems.
šŸ”„ Install updates — Keep Windows and your important software up to date.
šŸš€ Check startup programs — Too many programs launching at startup can make your PC feel sluggish.
šŸ›”ļø Run a security scan — Malware and unwanted software can quietly drag down performance.

Small maintenance now can prevent bigger problems later.

If your computer is slow, overheating, crashing, or just not acting right, HawkXero Tech can help.

šŸ”§ FIX IT FRIDAY: Speed Up Your Windows 11 Startup!

Does your computer seem to take forever to get to the desktop? One of the easiest places to start is your Startup Apps.

Every time Windows starts, some programs automatically launch in the background. Over time, these can pile up and slow down your boot time — even if you rarely use them.

Here’s a quick cleanup:

1ļøāƒ£ Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
2ļøāƒ£ Select Startup apps
3ļøāƒ£ Review what’s set to start automatically
4ļøāƒ£ Disable apps you don’t need running at startup
5ļøāƒ£ Restart your PC and see if things improve

šŸ’” Tip: Don’t just disable everything! Some programs and drivers are important. If you’re unsure what something does, leave it alone or ask someone who knows before disabling it.

A few minutes of cleanup can mean a faster startup and fewer programs quietly running in the background.

And if your computer is still painfully slow, startup apps may only be part of the problem. That’s where a proper system optimization can help.

Wired Wednesday: Comparing two laptop motherboards from 2010 (top) and 2020 (bottom), the density and miniaturization of the circuitry is obvious, along with the transition from USB-A to USB-C. Also the RAM being soldered in place rather than freely replaceable is another sign of the times. Avoid soldered RAM if you can as this greatly impacts the ability to repair your laptop!

šŸ› ļø Maintenance Monday: Clean Up Your Downloads Folder

When was the last time you actually cleaned out your Downloads folder?

Over time, it can become a dumping ground for installers, PDFs, pictures, ZIP files, documents, and random files you downloaded once and completely forgot about.

A few minutes of digital housekeeping can make your computer easier to navigate and help you find the files that actually matter.

Try this today:
• šŸ—‘ļø Delete files you no longer need
• šŸ“ Move important files to the folders where they belong
• šŸ“¦ Remove old installers and ZIP files after you’ve finished using them
• šŸ” Look for duplicate or forgotten downloads
• ā™»ļø Empty the Recycle Bin/Trash when you’re finished

And don’t stop with Downloads. Take a quick look through your Desktop, Documents, Pictures, and temporary files too.

You don’t have to clean your entire computer at once. A few minutes of digital maintenance today can prevent a much bigger mess later.

šŸ” Security Saturday: Fake IT Support Is Getting More Convincing

Attackers are increasingly impersonating IT support and using MFA or passkey setup as the excuse to get victims to click a link, approve a login, or register a new authentication method.

The safest rule is simple: if someone unexpectedly asks you to change your password, approve an MFA request, or set up a passkey, stop and verify who you’re dealing with. Don’t use the phone number or link they provide—contact your IT provider through a known, trusted channel.

Microsoft recently documented attacks using exactly this approach, including fake IT-support calls and texts designed to compromise cloud accounts.

šŸ’» WIRED WEDNESDAY: When a Windows Update Breaks Your Backup

Windows updates are an important part of keeping your computer secure—but every once in a while, an update can introduce problems of its own.

That’s happening with Microsoft’s September 2026 Windows 11 updates.

Microsoft has confirmed several issues affecting some Windows 11 systems following this month’s security updates. Remote Desktop problems, USB audio issues, and other bugs have already required fixes or workarounds.

But one issue deserves some extra attention: File History backups may stop working.

According to Microsoft, some users who installed the September update may find that File History can no longer create or update backups. The computer may even report that the backup drive needs to be reconnected when the drive is actually connected and working.

Even more concerning, the ā€œLast Backupā€ timestamp may stop updating, meaning you could potentially believe your files are being backed up when they actually aren’t.

Microsoft is currently working on a permanent fix.

So what should you do?

First, don’t panic and don’t automatically uninstall Windows updates.

Security updates are important, and Microsoft has already released fixes addressing some of the problems introduced earlier this month. The File History issue is still being worked on.

Instead, this is a good reminder to periodically verify that your backups are actually working.

A backup isn’t useful just because Windows says you have one.

Check:

• When was your last successful backup?
• Are your important files actually included?
• Can you access the backup?
• Could you restore a file if you needed to?
• Do you have another backup of anything truly important?

And remember: one backup is better than no backup, but multiple copies are better than one.

Windows Update is designed to keep your computer safer and more reliable. But no operating system is perfect. Taking a few minutes to verify your backups after a major update can save you from a much bigger headache later.

šŸ“– Want to read more about the issue?

BleepingComputer has a good breakdown of the problem here:

Keep your PC updated. Keep your backups verified. Keep your data protected.

That’s this week’s Wired Wednesday. šŸ”Œ

Microsoft warned that the built-in File History backup feature in Windows may stop working on some systems after installing the September 2026 security updates.

šŸ”§ Maintenance Monday: Give Your PC a 5-Minute Health Check

Your computer doesn’t always wait until something breaks to tell you there’s a problem.

Sometimes the warning signs are small: Windows takes a little longer to start, your storage is getting full, programs seem slower than usual, or you realize you haven’t checked your backups in months.

The good news? A quick monthly check can help you catch many problems before they become bigger ones.

šŸ–„ļø 1. Check for Windows Updates

Open Settings → Windows Update and make sure your computer is up to date.

Updates don’t just add new features. They can include important security fixes, bug fixes, and improvements to Windows.

šŸ’¾ 2. Check Your Storage

Take a look at how much free space is left on your main drive.

If your drive is getting very full, take some time to remove things you no longer need: especially large downloads, old installers, temporary files, and unused programs.

šŸš€ 3. Look at Your Startup Apps

Too many programs launching every time you turn on your computer can make startup take much longer than necessary.

Windows lets you review startup apps through Task Manager → Startup apps.

If you don’t recognize something, though, don’t just disable it blindly. Some startup programs are important to your hardware or other software.

šŸ›”ļø 4. Check Windows Security

Open Windows Security and make sure there aren’t any warnings waiting for your attention.

Your antivirus protection is most useful when it’s actually running and up to date.

ā˜ļø 5. Check Your Backups

Ask yourself one simple question:

ā€œIf this computer died tomorrow, would I still have my important files?ā€

If the answer is no, or you’re not sure, it’s time to look into a backup solution.

A computer can be replaced. Important photos, documents, and other personal files may not be.

ā±ļø That’s it!

Five minutes once a month isn’t much, but preventative maintenance can help you spot potential problems before they become expensive repairs or frustrating emergencies.

And if something doesn’t look right during your checkup, don’t ignore it. Catching a problem early can sometimes make all the difference.

How long has it been since you gave your PC a health check?

šŸ” Security Saturday: Don’t Take the Bait!

Phishing scams aren’t always obvious anymore. A message might look like it came from your bank, Microsoft, Amazon, or even someone you know.

Before clicking a link or opening an attachment, stop and ask:

• Did I expect this message?
• Is the sender address actually legitimate?
• Is it creating a sense of urgency or panic?
• Can I verify the request another way?

🚨 When in doubt, don’t click. Go directly to the company’s website or app instead of using the link in the message.

A few seconds of caution can save you from a compromised account, stolen information, or a whole lot of headaches.

šŸ›”ļø Stay alert. Stay secure.

Did you know that clicking "Shut Down" on a modern Windows PC doesn't actually turn it off completely?

Thanks to a feature called Fast Startup, Windows saves the state of your OS kernel to the disk to make booting up faster the next time. While that sounds great, it also means your computer is carrying over tiny errors, cached junk, and "digital fatigue" from days or weeks ago.

The Fix: The Weekly Restart Rule šŸ”„
If your computer feels sluggish, your Wi-Fi is acting up, or apps are crashing, do this:

Go to the Start Menu.

Click Power.

Select RESTART (not Shut Down).

Why it works: A formal Restart is the only way to fully "kill" every running process and clear the system cache. It’s like giving your brain a full night’s sleep instead of just a 10-minute power nap.

Pro-Tip: Want to see how long your PC has really been awake?

Right-click your Taskbar > Task Manager * Click the Performance tab

Look at "Up time" If that number says 5, 10, or 30 days... it's time for a reboot!
