The best time to make a care plan is before you urgently need one.

A fall. A hospitalization. A sudden diagnosis. A caregiver who can no longer manage everything alone.

Too often, these moments are when families first begin discussing long-term care.
Planning earlier gives families something incredibly valuable: 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲.

☑️Time to research.
☑️Time to talk.
☑️Time to understand preferences.
☑️Time to consider resources.
☑️Time to make thoughtful decisions together.

You don’t need to predict exactly what the future will bring. You can simply be better prepared for it.

Why starting long-term care planning conversations early offers loved ones time to share their wishes before decisions become urgent.

Meet Norma. 💙

Norma probably didn’t picture herself moving into assisted living when she did, but due to some personal life changes, she began to reevaluate how she might spend this next chapter of her life.

Being closer to her family was a priority, as well as having the right balance of independence, connection, and support services if needed.

With her daughter living about three hours away, they needed help exploring senior living options that would fit Norma’s specific requests and independence in this new area!

Gratefully, Norma and I connected through a fellow Senior Care Authority owner.

Within just a few weeks, we had identified the right fit. I toured the community with Norma’s daughter, who shared pictures and videos with her mom so they could make the decision together. They ultimately chose a beautiful two-bedroom apartment that would give Norma her own space, privacy, and room to bring many of the things that made her house feel like home.

Today, Norma is settling in and making the most of her new home! She’s enjoying exercise classes at her community and still has the flexibility to get out and cheer on her grandchildren at their soccer games. ⚽

And today, I finally got to meet Norma in person!

Stories like hers are a reminder that moving to assisted living doesn’t mean giving up independence or the things you love. She was very much a part of the decision of where she would live next, and that’s the best part-it was proactive planning with her needs at the forefront of the decision.

💙 Her daughter recently shared a five-star review of her experience working with me. I’m so grateful for the trust their family placed in me throughout this journey.

Some of the most important family conversations happen long before they’re needed.

During National Estate Planning Awareness Week, consider whether your family knows where important documents are located and understands your loved one’s wishes.

Estate planning can involve more than financial assets. Conversations may also include healthcare wishes, powers of attorney, advance directives and who should be involved if an older adult can no longer make certain decisions independently.

Having these conversations early can help everyone understand a loved one’s preferences and responsibilities.

➡️ Senior Care Authority can help families navigate the broader care-planning conversations that often accompany aging. Medicare Open Enrollment is also a good time to think beyond next year’s health plan. As families review Medicare coverage during Open Enrollment, there’s another important question worth asking:

If a senior loved one needed ongoing help with everyday activities, how would we provide, and pay for, that care?

Many families are surprised to learn that Medicare generally does not cover ongoing personal care when help with activities such as bathing, dressing or using the bathroom is the primary need. That makes it important to understand the difference between healthcare coverage and planning for potential long-term care needs.

Use this time to talk about what support is already needed, what family members can realistically provide, financial resources and long-term care insurance, and whether your loved one would prefer to remain at home or consider a senior living community if needs change.

Behind every care plan is a person, and often a family trying to make sense of many moving pieces. During Case Management Week, we recognize professionals who help individuals and families coordinate care, communicate across providers and navigate complex healthcare needs.

Families caring for an aging loved one often find themselves performing many of these same tasks: scheduling appointments, communicating with providers, researching resources and determining what needs to happen next.

They don’t have to navigate every decision alone.

➡️ When your family needs help seeing the bigger picture, connect with a local Senior Care Authority advisor: https://www.seniorcareauthority.com/

Senior Care Authority was a proud sponsor of a hole at the Par-4-A-Purpose Hospice of Wilson Fundraiser today.

Hospice is a wonderful, beneficial service that provides a high level of support in our community. The fundraiser helps provide additional support to the patients and families on Hospice services when they face a financial burden.

As someone who has worked in the Hospice profession and had family members on service, it is very near and dear to my heart.

It was a beautiful day on the course and I heard the fundraiser was very successful!
