Sometimes, great care looks like the little things.

When we began working with one of our clients, their family was concerned about more than just their loved one’s day-to-day needs. They wanted to know that someone would notice the little things. The changes in mood, the things they enjoyed, and the moments when they simply needed a little extra encouragement.

Our caregiver took the time to learn their routines and preferences. They shared conversations over a cup of coffee, helped with everyday tasks, encouraged outings when they were up for them, and made sure there was always time for companionship. Over time, something important happened: trust grew.

The family had greater peace of mind knowing their loved one had someone familiar and attentive by their side. And their loved one had another person in their life who genuinely looked forward to seeing them.

That’s what personalized care means to us. It isn't just about completing tasks on a checklist. It's about getting to know the person behind the care plan and creating moments that make someone’s day a little brighter.

Because the little things aren't little when they make someone feel seen, valued, and cared for.

Sometimes the hardest part of caring for a parent is feeling like you have to do it all.

You’re coordinating appointments.
Checking in between work and family responsibilities.
Managing medications, meals, errands, and household needs.
Trying to keep everyone informed.
And wondering if you’re doing enough.

It’s easy to forget that you need support, too.

Asking for help doesn’t mean you’re giving up responsibility for your loved one. It means you’re creating a support system that allows everyone to breathe a little easier.

The right care can give families more than practical help. It can provide peace of mind, consistency, and the reassurance that someone is there when you can’t be.

At Compass, we believe caring for an older loved one should never mean carrying everything alone.

When someone you love is living with dementia, communication can change - but connection is still possible.

It can be frustrating when a loved one asks the same question repeatedly, forgets something you've just explained, or becomes upset about something that doesn't seem to make sense. In these moments, how we respond can make a meaningful difference.

Instead of:
"I already told you that.”
Try: “Let’s talk about it again.”

Instead of:
“Don’t you remember?”
Try: “Let me help you remember.”

Instead of correcting every detail, try focusing on the emotion behind what your loved one is saying.

If they're worried, offer reassurance.
If they're frustrated, acknowledge their feelings.
If they're confused, provide simple information and gentle guidance.

Most importantly, remember that dementia may change a person's ability to process information, but it does not take away their need for dignity, patience, connection, and respect.

At Compass, we believe compassionate dementia care starts with meeting each person where they are - not where we wish they were.

Yesterday, Compass Concierge & Companions had the pleasure of participating in the second annual Cook for a Cause at Sable Lodge Retirement Community, benefiting the South Portland Food Pantry. It was such a fun afternoon filled with friendly competition, delicious food, and wonderful local partners all coming together to support our community.

Our own team took part in the Dessert Challenge - and we’re thrilled to share that Compass Concierge & Companions was named one of the winners! We were honored to be included alongside Transitions Real Estate Elevate Maine, Gentiva Hospice and Home Instead of Gorham.

A huge congratulations to everyone who participated, and an even bigger thank you to all of the culinary teams, organizers, senior living communities, home care organizations, and professional partners who made the event such a success.

We are grateful to be part of such a generous and connected community and especially grateful for the opportunity to support the South Portland Food Pantry!

Meet Cori, Owner of Compass Concierge & Companions

At the heart of Compass is a simple belief: every older adult deserves to feel seen, heard, respected, and valued.

Our owner, Coralee “Cori” DiBiase, RN, brings more than 20 years of nursing experience across a variety of hospital settings to Compass. Her broad clinical background gives her a deep understanding of the complex and changing needs that can come with aging - and the importance of looking at each person as an individual.

For Cori, great care is about more than meeting a list of needs. It’s about building trust, listening closely, and making sure each client receives thoughtful, personalized support that honors their dignity and independence.

That philosophy is woven into everything we do at Compass. We believe families deserve to feel confident that their loved one is receiving attentive, compassionate care from people who genuinely know and care about them.

When she’s not caring for clients or supporting the Compass team, Cori enjoys spending time with her husband, daughter, and stepson - and their two dogs, including a goofy Bernese Mountain Dog. She especially loves summers on Sebago Lake, traveling with her family, and making memories together.

We’re proud to have Cori at the helm of Compass and grateful for the experience, heart, and dedication she brings to the families we serve.
