It’s called smishing: phishing scams sent by text message, and they’re costing people more money than ever.

Here are three common text scams to watch for:

• Fake delivery alerts: Messages claiming there’s a problem with a package and asking you to verify your address or pay a redelivery fee.
• Phony job offers: Scams that pressure people to send money for equipment or share financial information during their hiring process.
• Bogus bank fraud warnings: Urgent texts that appear to come from your bank and ask you to verify a transaction, which can lead to stolen money, personal information or malware.

Scammers want you to react quickly. Slowing down, avoiding links in unexpected texts and checking directly with the company or bank can help you stay a step ahead.
