Happy National Red Wine Day! 🍷

Ever wonder how your favorite bottle stays fresh from the vineyard to your glass? Argon plays a bigger role than most people realize.

Because it's heavier than air, argon settles over wine during production and storage, creating a protective barrier that blocks oxidation — keeping flavor, color, and quality intact.

So next time you pour a glass, you can thank a gas you've probably never thought about. 🥂

Join us in celebrating Jason Berger on his 5-year MWSCO ! Read about his MWSCO journey below! 😁📰

Jason Berger, our current Outside Sales Representative at the Mankato store, has been a valued member of the MWSCO team for five years. During his time with the company, Jason has built strong relationships while serving and supporting customers throughout the Mankato area.

At the end of 2020, after many years in the welding industry, Jason was ready for a change from his previous employer. With extensive experience in the industry, Jason knew MWSCO had a strong reputation, so he reached out to Bruce Nuttal to inquire about potential opportunities. Although there were no positions available at the time, Jason felt MWSCO was a company worth waiting for. Over the next several months, he took on other opportunities within the welding industry while staying in touch with Bruce. In August 2021, his patience paid off when an opportunity became available, and Jason joined the MWSCO team as an Outside Sales Representative.

Jason says his favorite part of working at MWSCO is the strong team atmosphere. Whenever someone needs assistance or has a question, there is always a teammate willing to lend a hand. He describes MWSCO in three words: dependable, service-driven, and knowledgeable. One thing Jason especially appreciates about the Mankato team is the communication and collaboration among coworkers. The team regularly shares updates and discusses customer situations, so everyone is informed and on the same page heading into each day and week.

“Going out and visiting customers and building relationships with them is the key to my position,” Jason explains. “I have built not only long-term relationships but also friendships over the years.”

Outside of work, Jason enjoys spending time with his family and friends. He and his wife especially enjoy relaxing at the lake, spending time outdoors, and making lasting memories together. They also cherish opportunities to visit their grandchildren and be involved in their lives. One of his favorite travel memories is a two-week trip to Barcelona, Spain, in 1993. The trip gave him the opportunity to explore the city, experience the local culture, and take in the many sights. Compared with the other companies Jason has worked for throughout his career, he says MWSCO stands out because of its strong family atmosphere. He values the camaraderie, support, and genuine connections he has developed with his coworkers.

One important career lesson Jason has learned throughout his experience is the importance of being honest and transparent with customers. If you don’t know the answer to a customer’s question, it’s always better to be upfront and take the time to find the correct information rather than trying to make something up just to get through the conversation. Jason believes that building trust with customers starts with honesty, and that admitting when you don’t know something can ultimately lead to better service and stronger relationships.

Thank you, Jason, for five years of hard work, dedication, and outstanding service! We are incredibly fortunate to have you as part of the MWSCO team.

Part 2 of Industries Secretly Powered by Nitrogen, and this round gets even more surprising. 🍓

Ever wonder why frozen berries don't turn to mush when you thaw them? Liquid nitrogen freezes food almost instantly at -320°F, so ice crystals don't get the chance to wreck the texture.

And it's not just food. Race cars and airplanes both rely on nitrogen-filled tires. It's a more stable molecule than regular air, so it leaks slower and holds pressure steadier, even under extreme heat or altitude swings.

From food to tires, this gas covers more ground than you'd expect. 💡

What gas do you want to see next? Leave any suggestions in the comments!

Switching things up this week. We're stepping away from argon to talk about nitrogen. 🧪

Turns out this gas is just as sneaky-important. It's the reason farms can grow enough food to feed billions of people, and it's also what keeps airplane fuel tanks from turning into fire hazards! Nitrogen doesn't support fire the way oxygen does, so it fills the empty space instead.

From farms to flights, this one gas shows up in more places than you'd think.

Ever notice how bagged snacks stay crisp, or how deli meat lasts longer than it should? 🍷

That's argon at work.

This inert gas replaces oxygen inside food and beverage packaging, forming a protective barrier that blocks oxidation and bacterial growth, keeping snacks, meats, and ready-to-eat meals fresh without changing taste or texture. It's also the industry standard for protecting wine during both production and storage.

Ever wonder what keeps a weld from cracking, rusting, or failing under pressure? 🔧

It's argon.

This inert gas is the unsung hero behind MIG and TIG welding. It shields molten metal from oxidation, so welds stay strong, clean, and structurally sound. It's a critical part of how we build everything from cars to aircraft to the buildings around us.

This is Week 1 of our Importance of Argon series. Follow along as we break down the industries this essential gas quietly powers.
