I've been to sales trainings, coach trainings, certification courses, graduate schools in counseling and administrative leadership, networking courses etc etc etc, and I bet you all have too! And while I always love to learn and have my eyes opened to new perspectives, at the end of the day if my brain chemistry is in charge of a situation and is trying to run the show by using a "perfect approach/protocol" to a situation, I find it really hard to be fully present to the person or people in front of me. Do you?
And when I am not fully present with my heart wisdom in charge, I am not at my best and able to hear my intuition about what I need to bring to a situation. Whether at work or at home; colleagues, clients, or kids, using a particular prefab "approach" is usually a train wreck for me. Spirit has to move my bones (and mouth) not the latest fad approach.
So here's what I do! If I have been in learning mode about new approaches and perspectives and I'm eager to get some practice in applying them, I'm present to my eagerness and my curiosity. That may then lead me to say to the person or people in front of me, "I just went to a training/read an article with some really interesting ideas that I'm feeling could apply here. Are you game to play and see which parts might be useful?" And I stay present with their response. I don't drive an agenda or work from a list of must-dos. I stay engaged in the moment with what's present in the room.
Approaches are great as far as they go. But like a car without a driver, they are not a stand alone solution and can, in fact, do damage.
What do you notice about how things unfold when you're strictly following someone else's approach/protocol vs allowing YOUR presence to be the medicine?
