Zingiber zerumbet, commonly known as Shampoo Ginger, Awapuhi, or Pinecone Ginger, is a tropical perennial native to Southeast Asia and Polynesia. It is valued for its unique, pinecone-shaped inflorescences that turn bright red and fill with a fragrant, sudsy liquid traditionally used as a natural shampoo and skin conditioner. The plant has lush green foliage and thrives in moist, shady areas. Widely used in tropical landscaping, traditional Hawaiian medicine, and natural personal care products.

Golden Rain Tree (Koelreuteria elegans) is a beautiful ornamental tree that offers multiple seasons of interest. In summer, it produces large clusters of bright yellow flowers that cover the canopy. These are followed by distinctive pink to salmon-colored lantern-like seed pods that persist for months, creating a colorful display well into fall. Copernicia alba, also known as the Caranday Palm or Wax Palm, is a striking palm native to South America. It features a slender, upright trunk and dense, fan-shaped leaves that range from green to bluish-green. This palm is notable for its tolerance to seasonal flooding and high temperatures. In its native habitat, it forms dense stands in savannas and wetlands, contributing to the unique ecosystem with its structural and ecological presence.

Sometimes called "Coontie Palm," this is not actually a palm but a cycad. Cycads are a group of plants that produce cones instead of flowers. The plant also produces suckers to form a mounding shrub over time. The rusty brown cones provide winter interest, while the bright red-orange seeds produced on female cones further add to this plant’s appeal.

Very little maintenance is required for this native which can take drought, heat, and cold hardy to Zone 8B. Easy to grow in the landscape or in a container.

Interesting information:
Cycads have a long fossil history and were once a lot more diverse and abundant than they are now.
"Coontie" is one of the names the Seminoles had for this plant, and it roughly means "flour root". The flour was used as a food source many years ago.
