A milestone for Colombian numismatics.

During the Latin American Coin & Art Expo, held June 3 to 6, 2026, in Bogotá, Colombia, Daniel Frank Sedwick presented his newest work, Arce’s Doubloons, the result of years of dedicated research into the gold cob coinage of Bogotá under assayer Arce (1692 to 1714).

The presentation, simultaneously translated by Augi Garcia, brought this important study to an international audience in the very country where these remarkable coins were struck more than 300 years ago.

This long awaited publication establishes a lasting reference for collectors, researchers, and historians, preserving new discoveries and die study research that will continue to shape the understanding of Colombian colonial coinage for generations to come.

A fitting international debut for a work destined to become a standard reference, and the culmination of a multi year research project presented at one of Latin America’s premier numismatic events.

Sedwick Auction 39 closed with exceptionally strong results totaling more than $4.5 million, highlighted by rare Spanish colonial, shipwreck, Latin American, and world coins that attracted intense bidding from collectors worldwide.

Gold cobs led many of the headline prices, including Lot 27, a Lima gold cob 8 escudos 1712 M, NGC MS64 ex-1715 Fleet, which realized $60,000, and Lot 17, a Mexico City gold cob 8 escudos 1714 J, NGC MS64 ex-1715 Fleet, which sold for $40,500. Bogotá gold rarities also performed strongly, led by the rare mule 2 escudos of 1628 struck 1633 at $19,200.

Shipwreck treasures continued to command major attention. Lot 67, the massive Atocha silver ingot 43 from Oruro dated 1622 and weighing 86.2 pounds, realized $84,000, while the Whydah wreck Potosí cob 8 reales 1702 Y sold for $24,000.

Rare silver cobs generated some of the auction’s fiercest bidding. A Lima 8 reales of Philip II with assayer Rincón from the renowned Ugaz collection realized $72,000, while the Potosí Royal cob 8 reales 1638 TR achieved $42,000. Bogotá silver also excelled, highlighted by the rare cob 8 reales 1668 PoRS at $39,000.

Strong prices continued across Mexican, Colombian, Chilean, Haitian, and ancient coinage, confirming continued worldwide demand for rarity, provenance, and exceptional quality in the numismatic market.

Our next auction will take place November 5-7, 2026. We are now accepting consignments through September 1, 2026.
