Steve Jackson weighs in on the OPB backstory of One-Page Bulge

was one of the first four releases from SJ Games when we launched in 1980. It was the historical component of a drop that also included a modern game (Raid on Iran), a science fiction game (Dennis Sustare’s Kung Fu 2100), and a fantasy entry (the first Cardboard Heroes set).

The original One-Page Bulge was in a Ziplock bag. Later printings came in a plastic Pocket Box. The new one will be significantly fancier, and I’m excited about it for several reasons.

In the first place, we’ll have full-sized components – generally better for playability, and specifically better for my trifocaled Boomer eyes.

We’ll also have professional graphics, which I promise you are better than “Steve at a light table with rub-down arrows in 1980” graphics. Which is exactly where the original cover came from!

And we’ll have some new design features, such as random event cards and differently shaped counters for depots.

Finally, we’ll have another round of playtest and rules review. I don’t pretend that 1980 Steve was the be-all and end-all of rules writing . . . and, by relaxing the original “one page of rules” just a bit, we can add some logical redundancy where it aids clarity.

I’m really looking forward to the new edition, and very grateful to Dana for spearheading the effort. And I’ll be very interested in the feedback from those who play both editions.

"Bloody Omaha: D-Day Amphibious Assault™️" is a complex solitaire and two-player board game featuring multiple landing waves and drift, beach obstacles, fortified positions, and strongpoints, as well as hedgerow terrain inland. It includes large one-inch counters for American infantry companies and battalions, engineers, tanks, and hidden defense markers for German armored vehicles. The game is enhanced by playing cards that introduce tactical opportunities and challenges.
