Luke and I had a great time working on this project for Gloria Gilbert in Big Stone Gap, Virginia.

We started by placing a 6-inch base of #357 gravel for Gloria’s new outbuilding. After the building was delivered, Rafael Martinez poured a concrete ramp. Luke and I returned to add more #57 gravel, and two weeks later I applied rock glue to help keep the gravel in place.

Phase 1 of the Scott & Karen Morrow project is underway!

We’re cleaning out the old culvert and reshaping the ditch line to restore proper drainage. Once everything is opened up and flowing correctly, we’ll install #57 stone throughout the ditch.

Good drainage helps protect driveways, lawns, and surrounding property from erosion and standing water.

20 years of buildup… one bucket at a time.

Most people look at a pond and think the bottom is solid. But after years of leaves, grass, algae, and other organic material settling to the bottom, a thick layer of mulm can develop.

That’s what we’re removing here.

This black material is nutrient-rich organic muck that has accumulated over decades. As it builds up, ponds become shallower, water quality declines, aquatic weeds thrive, and the pond gradually loses its storage capacity.

Pond cleanouts aren’t just about making a pond look better—they help restore depth, improve water quality, and extend the life of the pond.

This project has been especially challenging because we’re not only removing years of accumulated mulm from the pond, but we’re also dealing with deep organic soils around the shoreline that have built up over time.

It’s slow, messy work… but seeing a pond come back to life makes it worth it.
