Own Your Story!

One of the greatest gifts you can give yourself is the freedom to be who you truly are.

When we stop comparing, stop pretending, and start embracing the person we were created to be we are much happier.

Being true to yourself isn't always easy.

It requires courage, honesty, and a willingness to trust your own journey.

It means honoring your values, listening to your heart, and making choices that reflect the life you genuinely want to live.

Happiness is also a choice we make every day. It doesn't mean life is perfect or that challenges disappear.

It means choosing gratitude over bitterness, possibility over fear, and hope over discouragement.

Our circumstances may not always be within our control, but our attitude and response always are.

At some point, we also have to take responsibility for our lives.

We can't change the past, but we can decide what we do next. We can own our decisions, learn from our mistakes, and take intentional steps toward the future we want to create.

Your story is uniquely yours.
Every setback, every lesson, every victory has shaped who you are today.

Don't be afraid to own that story.

The chapters that challenged you often become the ones that teach, inspire, and strengthen others.

As you continue pursuing your purpose, remember that success isn't just about achieving goals. It's about becoming the person you're meant to be along the way.

Stay authentic.
Stay focused.
Stay grateful.
And keep moving forward with confidence.

Most importantly, don't forget to make time for what matters most.

Take a break, create memories, spend time with people you love, and enjoy the simple moments that make life meaningful.

Have a wonderful weekend, and make time to truly enjoy it.

๐Ÿ“ŒWomen Who Change the World

Some of the most powerful change-makers in our world work quietly.

They lead nonprofits.
They build programs.
They raise funds.
They bring people together around a shared purpose.

Every day, women in the social impact sector create opportunities where none existed before.

They help families find stability, students find hope, and communities find strength.

Behind every successful nonprofit program is a network of people who believe change is possible.

Fundraising professionals are often at the center of that work. They connect generosity with mission. They turn ideas into action and vision into impact.

Their work is not only about raising money. It is about building trust, inspiring people, and creating lasting change.

When women lead with purpose and compassion, communities thrive.

If this conversation inspires you, I invite you to join my upcoming online Nonprofit Women Circle Live Talk this Saturday.

We will gather to share ideas, stories, and strategies for creating meaningful impact together.

Sign up and join us.
I would love to see you there.

May you have discernment to see the opportunities around you, courage to seize those opportunities, strength to turn them into reality, faith to believe that you "have it in you" to do the extraordinary with every God given opportunity.

5 Mistakes People Make in (and What to Do Instead)

It was such a joy teaching a Fundraising Masterclass this past weekend.

We covered the Fundraising Cycle, and I want to highlight a few common mistakes I see when people begin donor prospectingโ€”and how you can gently avoid them.

1. Asking Too Soon

One of the biggest mistakes is jumping straight into โ€œthe ask.โ€ Prospecting is not about requesting fundsโ€”itโ€™s about building connections.
Instead: Simply share an impactful story or a meaningful report of your work. Let people lean in before you invite them further.

2. Talking to the Same People

Itโ€™s easy to stay within your comfort zone. But growth doesnโ€™t happen there.
Instead: Start smallโ€”talk to 3 new people. Think of those whoโ€™ve attended your events, referrals from your board or network, or even organizations you believe could fund your work.

3. Leading with Information, Not Impact

Listing facts and programs without heart can miss the mark.
Instead: Lead with a story. Help people feel the difference your work is making.

4. Treating Prospecting Like a One-Time Task

Prospecting isnโ€™t a checklistโ€”itโ€™s the beginning of a relationship.
Instead: Once someone responds, begin the donor cultivation process. Nurture the connection intentionally over time.

5. Overcomplicating the First Step

Sometimes we wait until we have the perfect system or message.
Instead: Keep it simple. A genuine conversation is more powerful than perfection.

As you move forward, rememberโ€”this is about planting seeds, not harvesting immediately. Start small, stay consistent, and allow relationships to grow naturally. Youโ€™re already doing meaningful workโ€”now itโ€™s about inviting others into that story.

๐Ÿ“ŒWhat's Coming Up!

๐ŸคฉIโ€™m excited to share that my next Nonprofit Fundraising class will be at the end of August! In this session, Iโ€™ll walk you through how to create and implement an effective fundraising plan, with practical strategies to help you maximize your end-of-year giving. Rememberโ€”it's not just about working harder, but working smarter.

โ˜€๏ธI also have a few coaching spots available in June and July. If youโ€™re thinking about starting a new nonprofit or would love personalized guidance tailored to your organization, Iโ€™d be honored to support you. Coaching sessions start at $150/hour.

๐ŸคฉAnd weโ€™re just about thereโ€”our Nonprofit Women Circle Live Talk with Ess is happening this Saturday, June 6th, from 1:00โ€“2:30 PM EDT (8:00โ€“9:30 PM Kenyan time). Itโ€™s going to be a wonderful, uplifting sessionโ€”and itโ€™s completely FREE! If you havenโ€™t signed up yet, nowโ€™s the perfect time. Donโ€™t forget to invite a friend too! Everyone waits for the โ€œbig donor.โ€
Most growth starts much smaller.

Youโ€™re probably overlooking your healthiest donors.
Because they havenโ€™t โ€œbloomedโ€ yet.

You keep calling it โ€œslow growth.โ€
Your donors might call it trust.

The best donor signals are easy to ignore.
Thatโ€™s what makes them valuable.

This spring in Michigan has been a lesson in patience. Just when I thought the warm weather had finally arrived, another chilly morning rolled in. And repeatโ€ฆ until last week when temperatures seem to have stabilized.

My little urban โ€œgardenโ€ is weeks behind where I hoped it would be. The tomatoes are still waiting for consistent sunshine, the flowers are slow to bloom, and honestly, Iโ€™m late getting almost everything planted.

And yetโ€ฆdespite the delayed start, Iโ€™ve already harvested herbs.

Tiny sprigs of basil, parsley, and mint have found their way into dinners and iced tea. Not because I rushed the process, but because I paid attention to what was ready to grow first.

It reminded me a lot of donor cultivation.
In fundraising, we often focus on the โ€œbig harvestโ€ โ€” the major gift, the annual campaign, the event sponsorship. We create timelines and goals and expect momentum to happen quickly. But meaningful donor relationships rarely grow on our preferred schedule.

Cultivation takes patience. It takes consistency. It takes showing up even when progress feels slow.

And sometimes, while weโ€™re waiting for the larger harvest, there are small signs of growth already happening.

โ†ช๏ธA donor who starts engaging more often.

โ†ช๏ธA first-time supporter who shares your mission with friends.

โ†ช๏ธA volunteer who becomes an advocate. These are the herbs in the garden โ€” early indicators that something healthy is taking root.

The lesson my little Michigan garden is teaching me this year is simple: growth doesnโ€™t have to be fast to be fruitful.

Keep tending the relationships.
Keep watering the seeds. Celebrate the small harvests along the way.

The bigger blooms will come.
