Today in ABA: A VERY serious game of Candyland… there were tears 🍭

ABA itself can be so incredibly rewarding. ❤️

I know ABA can sometimes be at the center of controversy, and I also know how important it is for us as providers to continue learning, evolving, and making sure the work we do is compassionate, individualized, and meaningful.

Recently, we had one of those moments that reminded us exactly why we do this work.

One of our learners, who has primarily been nonspeaking, has always connected with us through music and songs. Music is something they genuinely love, so we’ve used that love as a way to connect, engage, and communicate.

And then we got to hear our learner singing along with us. 🥹

It literally brought tears to our eyes.

Not because speaking is the ultimate goal or because vocal communication is somehow more valuable than other forms of communication—but because this learner found another way to connect with the people around them through something they genuinely love.

And that is HUGE. 💛

Fun fact about Nurture: We also have a Speech-Language Pathologist from Crew Speech who comes to our clinic once a week to provide speech services to some of our learners.

That collaboration between ABA and Speech has been incredibly valuable, particularly for learners who experience challenges with language and communication. Our ABA team gets to support communication throughout the learner’s everyday environment, while Speech brings their specialized expertise in speech, language, and communication.

Different disciplines. Different areas of expertise. One learner. One team.

Because sometimes progress doesn’t look like sitting at a table mastering a target.Sometimes it sounds like a child singing a song with you. 🎶💛

🍪💙 Cookie Monster Craft Day! 💙🍪

Who knew Cookie Monster could help us work on so many important skills?! 🎨

Today, our kiddos created their very own Cookie Monster paintings, but as always, there was a lot more happening than just arts and crafts!

During today’s activity, we focused on:

🍪 Following group instructions – Directions were presented to the group, giving our kiddos opportunities to attend, listen, and follow along without every instruction being delivered individually.

💬 Functional communication – Kiddos used their individual communication modalities to request the materials they needed, including practicing asking their peers for items!

🖍️ Making choices & promoting autonomy – There was no “one right way” to make Cookie Monster! Kiddos could choose whether they wanted to use paint, crayons, markers, or a combination to create their masterpiece.

🎨 Requesting missing items – We intentionally created opportunities for kiddos to notice when something they needed wasn’t immediately available and independently request the missing item to continue their craft.

🤝 Peer interaction – With materials being used throughout the group, our kiddos had natural opportunities to communicate with one another while completing a shared activity.

Activities like this allow us to take skills we may practice individually and bring them into a natural, fun group environment where communication, independence, choice, and social interaction all come together. 💙

And judging by our Cookie Monsters… we’d say today was a SUCCESS! 🍪👹🎨

🌟 Superstar Spotlight: Miss Tati, BCaBA, LABA!

Today, We are shining a very special spotlight on one of our amazing Case Supervisors! 💫

Miss Tati consistently goes above and beyond in her therapeutic practices and interventions. She is hands on with her clients and works closely with their therapists to ensure each client receives the individualized care they need. She does an incredible job of meeting clients where they are, thoughtfully tailoring activities, programs, and interactions to their current needs while steadily working toward bigger goals.

Miss Tati is also committed to continuous learning and quality care. She is always researching, staying up to date on best practices, and bringing that knowledge back to the team so everyone stays informed and aligned. Her communication, collaboration, and knowledge help promote continuity of care and better outcomes for our clients.

Whether she is providing direct therapy, supervision, parent training, collaborating with staff and families, or simply supporting the clinic, Miss Tati brings the same level of dedication, professionalism, and compassion. She consistently keeps client dignity and individuality at the forefront while helping strengthen communication and teamwork across the board.

Miss Tati, thank you to our shining star. Your dedication to your clients, families, and team makes a meaningful difference every day. We are so grateful for all that you bring to Nurture and proud to celebrate the incredible work you do!

We Don’t Target “Sharing”

You might notice that “sharing” isn’t a skill we specifically target in our ABA programs. And there’s a reason for that.

In real life, we aren’t expected to share everything that belongs to us.

You don’t have to share your sandwich because someone else wants a bite.
You don’t have to share your phone because someone else wants to use it.
You certainly don’t have to share your paycheck because someone else asks for it.

So why would we teach children that they have to give up something they’re using simply because another child wants it?

Instead, we target cooperative play.

Cooperative play teaches children the social skills they actually need to successfully play and interact with others. And yes—sometimes sharing is naturally part of that!

For example, we may practice:

* Sharing from a community pile of blocks while building something together
* Taking turns rolling the dice during a game
* Passing game pieces or materials back and forth
* Waiting while another person takes their turn
* Asking to join an activity
* Responding when someone asks to use an item
* Negotiating and problem-solving when two people want the same thing

But here’s the important part: having access to a toy does not automatically mean a child has to give it up because someone else wants it.

If a child is appropriately playing with a toy and another child approaches and asks for a turn, we can teach the child to respond to that request—but their response is allowed to be “no.”

They may choose to share.
They may choose to take turns.
They may say, “You can have it when I’m done.”
Or they may simply say, “No, thank you.”

And we can also teach the other child an equally important skill: how to appropriately respond when someone says no.

That is social development too.

Our goal isn’t to teach children that being kind means always giving someone else what they want. We want them to learn cooperation, turn-taking, communication, flexibility, boundaries, and respect for another person’s “no.”

Sometimes sharing is part of cooperative play.

But sharing should be a social skill—not forced compliance.

We LOVE celebrating birthdays at our clinic! 🎂🎉

Birthdays are such a special opportunity to make our kiddos feel celebrated, valued, and part of their clinic community. And while we’re having fun, these celebrations also create so many natural opportunities to practice the skills we work on every day!

Birthday celebrations can help us work on:

* Social engagement and participating in group activities
* Functional communication, such as requesting, commenting, and answering questions
* Peer interactions and shared enjoyment
* Turn-taking and waiting
* Flexibility when routines look a little different
* Tolerating group songs, sounds, decorations, and other changes in the environment
* Making choices and advocating for preferences
* Practicing greetings and responding to peers
* Building independence during naturally occurring routines
* Generalizing skills outside of structured teaching activities

One of our favorite parts of ABA is finding ways to make treatment functional, meaningful, and FUN. Skills don’t only have to be practiced at a table—they can be practiced while playing, celebrating, interacting with friends, and participating in the everyday moments of childhood.

🎓Oh, the Places You’ll Go! Hats off to our Grads!

We celebrated a BIG accomplishment… mastering out of ABA! While graduation is always a bittersweet moment, it is also one of the greatest rewards for the work we do. Watching our kids grow, overcome challenges, discover new strengths, and accomplish both the little and big milestones along the way ,is a journey we are honored to be a part of. Every skill mastered, every goal achieved, and every moment of progress has led to this special moment. We celebrate not only where they are now and how far they have come, but also the bright future and all the possibilities that lie ahead.

As we celebrate and say our farewells, we keep in mind that graduation is proof of a job well done on their end, and on ours as well. It is a reflection of the dedication, perseverance, teamwork, and countless moments of growth that have brought them to this special moment. As we close this chapter and they begin their next adventure, we could not be prouder of how far they have come or more excited for all the places they will go!
