Every leader I meet is, in their own opinion, “really good with people.”

Then I introduce them to a Zephyr, our herd's lead horse.

Zephyr does not care about your title. He has not read your résumé. He is deeply unmoved by the fact that you run a 200-person org. He responds to exactly one thing — how you’re actually showing up, right now — and he'll let you know what he thinks in about ninety seconds. Usually by wandering off or leading you back to the barn!

I’ve spent my career on leadership — learning it (everyday), coaching it, teaching it, and co-writing the Developing Leaders at All Levels: A Practical Field Guide for Leaders, Facilitators & Coaches. But the work that genuinely changes people happens out here, where you can’t talk your way out of anything.

Watching a leader see themselves clearly — sometimes for the first time in twenty years — is the best thing I do. So I started writing about it.

It’s called In the Arena with Marietta. First piece is up (link in comments), and I’d love to have you along. 🐎

Trust isn’t built in one big moment — it’s built in small, consistent leadership behaviors.

This week, I’m teaching the ABCDs of Trust: Able, Believable, Connected, Dependable.

If you want to experience trust-building in real time, our Equine-Assisted Learning sessions offer a unique way to see how your presence and behaviors shape relationships.

Today’s reminder: Trust is a verb

Marietta Stalcup - Friends and colleagues. If you are looking for an interview coach, I HIGHLY recommend Tom Brown and Interview Coaching Solutions

While thinking about—or actively searching for—a new job, it’s important to prioritize what truly matters: your personal well-being.

A job search adds multiple layers of complexity to your daily life. Networking calls, interviews, preparation time, and follow-ups all demand energy and focus. On top of that, you’re still expected to perform your current role at a high level. With so much going on, what often falls by the wayside? Your well-being.

One way I take care of mine is by walking dogs. As you can see, I’m getting ready for a walk—although sadly for Helix, this particular outing wasn’t his. Instead, I was heading to the Maury County Animal Shelter, where I volunteer as a dog walker. Spending time with the dogs allows me to share a little love, get some extra steps in, and—most importantly—take a few moments to recharge. (For the record, Helix had already enjoyed two walks before this photo was taken!)

If you’re gearing up for—or currently in—a job search, I encourage you to intentionally build time into your schedule for your well-being. Taking care of yourself doesn’t slow you down—it actually helps you show up as a stronger, more confident candidate.

You don’t have to navigate your job search alone. Contact me to set up a complimentary 30-minute coaching session to discuss your specific situation. My email is [email protected]

P.S. What do you think of the dog-walking hat? It features a unique, hand-drawn design created by my son 🐾

When a Horse Won’t Follow Your Words—It Follows Your Integrity

Credibility isn’t a title—it’s alignment. In Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL), horses respond to congruence, not charisma.

Leaders quickly see whether their intentions match their actions—and that insight transfers straight back to the workplace.

This week, choose one conversation where you’ll slow down, listen fully, and align words with actions. That’s credibility in motion.

When I see this photo, I immediately think TRUST. This participant was present, consistent, and credible - and as a result, Jotspun TRUSTED.

🚀 The Catalyst Effect Field Guide is here!

I'm honored to be one of the authors - along with Bettye Ellison and Jerry Toomer, PhD - of this transformative resource, designed to help teams amplify their collective impact through intentional leadership and connection.

This guide is the result of deep collaboration and a shared belief that every person has the power to be a catalyst—to elevate others, foster trust, and drive meaningful change. It’s not just a tool for teams; it’s a mindset for legacy-building.

A favorite quote of mine: “Often, it is not your star player—the one who shines the brightest—that is the most influential and impactful on the team. In most cases, it is the unsung, unselfish hero who simply makes everyone better because they do everything with personal and professional credibility and put the team’s mission above their own interests.”

💡 As I reflect on our journey creating this guide, I’m reminded how powerful it is when people come together with purpose. I hope it inspires leaders at every level to lean into their influence and create environments where everyone thrives.
