Caregiver, sometimes “I’m fine” is the answer we give before we have even checked in with ourselves. When everyone needs something from you, your own feelings can get pushed to the back of the line. They still deserve your attention. 🤍

Today, take a quiet moment to finish this sentence: “I feel ___, and I could use ___.” Maybe you feel lonely and could use a conversation, or overwhelmed and could use a few minutes of quiet. You do not have to solve everything to acknowledge what is true for you.

You can love your family deeply and have difficult feelings about caregiving. That does not make you less loving. What is one word that describes how you are feeling today?

Caregiver, dinner can be simple and still nourish you. 🌱 When you’ve spent the day caring for everyone else, start with one easy foundation: beans.

Beans provide plant protein and fiber. Pair them with a whole grain and colorful vegetables for an easy way to bring more whole plant foods into your day. You don’t need a complicated recipe to get started.

Try this at your next meal: drain and rinse no-salt-added canned black beans, warm them with cooked brown rice, and add steamed broccoli. Finish with lime and your favorite salt-free seasonings. Choose portions and ingredients that fit your needs and any prescribed eating plan.

What’s your favorite bean to build a meal around: black beans, pintos, or chickpeas? 💚

Caregiver, Sunday meal prep doesn’t have to take your whole evening. Preparing a few ingredients can make it easier to include yourself in the care you give this week. 💚

Try this simple starting point: one whole grain, one bean, and two vegetables. Brown rice, black beans, broccoli, and sweet potatoes make a colorful combination. Beans provide plant protein and fiber. Adjust portions and ingredients to your needs, and change the flavor with lemon, garlic, or your favorite seasonings.

Tonight, prepare enough for two lunches. Already-cooked plain brown rice, no-salt-added canned beans, and frozen vegetables can help keep it manageable. Refrigerate promptly in shallow containers within two hours, keep your refrigerator at 40°F or below, and use refrigerated portions within 3–4 days. Freeze portions intended for later in the week.

You deserve a meal that’s ready when you finally get a moment to eat. What ingredient could you prepare tonight to make tomorrow easier?

Caregiving can fill a day before you find a moment for yourself. From one caregiver to another, your movement can begin with a small opening in the day. 💚

Some physical activity is better than none, and short sessions add up. Regular activity helps reduce the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Five minutes is a starting point you can build on as your time and abilities allow.

Tonight, try a five-minute walk indoors or along a familiar, well-lit path. Choose a comfortable pace, shorten the time if needed, or adapt with seated movement that fits your abilities and care plan. Where could you fit a little movement into your evening?

Caregiving conversations can become emotional, especially when everyone is tired, worried, or feeling unheard. You do not have to provide an immediate answer simply because someone wants one. A respectful pause can help you respond with intention instead of reacting under pressure.

Try saying, “I care about this, and I need a little time before I respond.” Use the pause to breathe, gather your thoughts, and decide what you truly want to communicate.

What conversation in your life might benefit from a thoughtful pause?

Caring for everyone else can leave you wondering what to make for yourself. Here’s a simple dinner idea: a sweet potato stuffed with chickpeas and colorful vegetables. 💚

Scrub and pierce a sweet potato, then microwave on a microwave-safe plate until tender, turning halfway through. Split it open and add ½ cup of warmed, drained no-salt-added chickpeas, cooked broccoli, and diced red pepper. Mix 1 tablespoon of tahini with lemon juice and enough water to drizzle over the top.

Chickpeas contribute plant protein, and frozen broccoli makes this meal easier on a busy evening. Adjust the portion to your appetite and individual nutrition needs. Try this combination for one dinner this week. What vegetable would you add to yours?
