Thoughts on the best equipment I used over my career.. Maybe it can be of use to someone just starting out or thinking of making a big purchase on a piece of equipment that may be vital to their job.

What I Would Go Back and Tell Myself as a New Law Enforcement Officer …

Slow down. You don’t have to prove how tough you are every day.

Listen more than you talk. The older Officers may not always say it the right way, but many of them are trying to teach you lessons they learned the hard way.

Treat people with respect—even when they don’t return it. Your authority comes from the badge, but your influence comes from how you carry yourself.

Don’t confuse activity with effectiveness. You don’t have to write the most tickets or make the most arrests to be a good Officer. Do your job, use good judgment, and make your actions matter.

Your reputation is being built with every traffic stop, report, arrest, and interaction. Protect it. Once damaged, it is hard to repair.

Stay humble. The uniform does not make you better than anyone else, and rank does not automatically make someone a leader.

Take care of your family. The job will take every holiday, weekend, and hour you are willing to give it—and it will replace you when you leave.

Save money early. Invest consistently. One day, the freedom to walk away will be worth more than another promotion.

Take care of your body and your mind. The things you see and experience do not simply disappear because you refuse to talk about them.

Choose your battles. Not every insult requires a response, not every mistake requires punishment, and not every disagreement is worth carrying home.

Most importantly, enjoy the journey. One day, you will put on that uniform for the last time—and you will wonder how the years went by so quickly.

Be firm. Be fair. Stay humble. And never forget why you started.

When I look back at the progression of my body during my career, one thing is clear..

Just putting this out there for any agencies or departments looking for practical, applicable, and affordable training.

I have been contacted recently for some CE training and classes for Law Enforcement agencies. I have done some in person and some via Zoom/Teams. I prefer in person, but just shoot me a message if you have any interest.

Take time to talk, shake a hand, be nice, be approachable when you don’t want to be, give a kid a teddy bear or plastic badge..
People remember how you treated them.. and you might just make an impression on them for life..

For any Law Enforcement officers that may follow me, I have put together a quick checklist for testimony or depositions.
As an Expert Witness, I review depositions on almost every case I’m involved in.. About 90% of the time or more, the officer is embarrassed or is made to look incompetent..
Don’t let that happen to you!

DEPOSITION CHECKLIST FOR POLICE OFFICERS

Before you walk into a deposition, remember this: opposing counsel is not there to help you explain yourself. Every answer becomes sworn testimony and may be used in court.

✅ BEFORE THE DEPOSITION

☐ Meet with the attorney representing you or your agency
☐ Review your reports, supplements, photographs, video, audio, and relevant policies
☐ Refresh your memory—but do not memorize answers
☐ Identify any mistakes or inconsistencies before questioning begins
☐ Understand the allegations and your role in the case
☐ Get a good night’s sleep and arrive early
☐ Dress professionally and silence your phone

✅ DURING THE DEPOSITION

☐ Listen to the entire question
☐ Pause before answering
☐ ANSWER ONLY THE QUESTION ASKED
☐ Tell the truth—never guess or speculate
☐ If you do not know, say, “I don’t know”
☐ If you do not remember, say, “I don’t recall”
☐ Ask for clarification if the question is confusing
☐ Do not exaggerate, argue, joke, or become defensive
☐ Avoid absolute words like “ALWAYS” and “NEVER” unless they are completely accurate
☐ Allow your attorney time to object before answering
☐ Correct inaccurate assumptions built into a question
☐ Ask to see the document if questioned about its exact wording
☐ Remember that facial expressions, attitude, and body language matter
☐ Request a break if needed—but answer any pending question first

✅ BEFORE YOU LEAVE

☐ Correct any answer you believe was inaccurate or incomplete
☐ Ask about reviewing the transcript for errors
☐ Do not discuss your testimony casually after the deposition

The goal is not to “win” the deposition. The goal is to provide truthful, accurate, professional testimony without volunteering unnecessary information.

Prepare carefully. Listen closely. Answer precisely. THEN STOP TALKING.

My old Interdiction Partner and the person I credit with most of my Criminal Interdiction success (also who I reference to on some of my videos) was inducted into the National Criminal Interdiction Hall of Fame this past week..
So deserving and so refreshing to see someone truly deserving be recognized.
I’ve spent a career seeing people that didn’t move the needle or make any sort of difference receive awards because of their rank or political connections.. This guy truly was a 1%er and I couldn’t be more proud of him..
