What are stem cells?
Among the tens of trillions of cells that make up your body, there is a special group of cells that retains an incompletely differentiated state and can develop along different pathways. These are stem cells.
What makes them unique are two key abilities: self-renewal, allowing them to maintain the stem cell population, and differentiation, allowing them to develop into specialized cell types depending on the type of stem cell and its biological environment.
Most mature cells have already differentiated and perform relatively specialized functions. Stem cells, by contrast, retain the ability to generate new cells, playing important roles in development and tissue maintenance.
These properties have made stem cells an important area of research in modern biology and medicine.
