“From Burnout to Balance: Thrive in Humanitarian Work”

One of my clients, a program manager working in disaster relief, shared:

??? Burnout part of the job??? Do we, humanitarian and development workers, need to sacrifice our mental health just because we are contributing to a better world? This disaster relief manager thought burnout was ‘just part of the job’—until coaching with me changed everything for him.

My client was suffering from “Compassion Fatigue”. Compassion fatigue is the emotional and physical exhaustion that can occur from constantly caring for others and being exposed to their pain and suffering. It’s often referred to as the “cost of caring” and is common among professionals like healthcare workers, humanitarian staff, therapists, and caregivers.

👉🏻 In the fast-paced and demanding world of humanitarian and development work, the pressure to “save the world” 🌍 can be both a driving force and a silent accomplice to neglecting mental health. While these professionals are hailed as heroes 🦸🏽‍♂️ for their selfless efforts, the very expectations that surround them contribute to a culture that often overlooks their well-being.

The ethos of heroism can inadvertently breed an environment where the mental health of humanitarian workers takes a back seat. The relentless pursuit of seemingly insurmountable goals can lead to burnout and emotional exhaustion. The notion that these individuals should be immune to the strains of their challenging work creates a culture of silence around mental health issues.

It’s essential to recognize that humanitarian and development workers are not invincible. They are compassionate individuals working in complex, often traumatic environments. The weight of witnessing human suffering and the relentless pursuit of ambitious goals can strain even the most resilient minds.

Organizations within the sector must acknowledge this issue and take proactive steps to prioritize the mental well-being of their teams. In humanitarian and development work, professionals often find themselves immersed in challenging environments, working tirelessly to make a positive impact in remote areas. The unique work situations these individuals face, such as isolation, lack of relaxation, and limited entertainment options, may contribute to career confusion and stress.

The Isolated Office Compounds: Humanitarian and development workers frequently operate from isolated office compounds in remote areas, where access to urban amenities is limited. These compounds serve as hubs for their work, but the isolation can lead to feelings of seclusion. Without the daily interactions and support systems found in more urban settings, workers may experience a sense of detachment that affects their mental well-being.

Non-Family Duty Stations: Being stationed in non-family duty stations and isolated from family and friends can create a profound emotional strain. Implementing mental health support programs, creating opportunities for social interaction, and offering career development guidance are crucial steps. FINDING WORK-LIFE BALANCE: WHEEL OF LIFE

😇 Are you feeling overwhelmed and struggling to find a balance between work and life priorities? And do you think it is time to feel a bit happier in all the wonderful stuff that you are doing?

Obviously🧐 there is nothing wrong with you, just a heavy focus on a few priorities, and too little focus on some others that are actually important for you to feel more happy, feel more joy and feel more balance in your life.

🤓 My life was very work oriented. I was spending all my time working, developing my time professionally, and spending time with friends and family. That was all ok, but I was spending too little time on my creative side and hobbies, and too little time in the gym for my physical and also mental well being. I set myself some clear goals and made a little action plan. And guess what…. Doing much better now! By no means perfect, but I feel so much more at ease, and light during the day.
