Respectful Curiosity: A Sign of Intercultural Maturity

In multicultural settings, curiosity is valuable — but only when paired with respect.

When I was a university student, a Malaysian friend told me that his American roommate once asked him:

“Do Malaysians still live in trees?”

The question wasn’t meant to offend — but it revealed how uninformed curiosity, without context or care, can easily cause harm.

By contrast, respectful curiosity:
