MEET THE DESIGNER: The Rural Market by Borenga Julie Junior
“Every piece has its own identity. I never make the same design twice.”
Julie first created The Rural Market to represent and support the people who travel all the way from the islands to sell their products. When she began making her own pieces, she kept the name, a reminder of the island hands and island spirit behind everything she creates.
Her journey began with a conversation with her mother-in-law about the meri blouse. Its designs are traditionally made with fabric, so Julie wondered what would happen if paint became part of the story. She experimented, people loved the results, and a passion was born.
Colour is always where she begins. Self-taught, she paints each length by hand, and if a piece doesn’t meet her vision, it is never sold. The ones that do are one of a kind, and they often sell within seconds.
With The Rural Market, no two pieces are alike, just like the people who wear them.
