A law firm came in 40% over their marketing budget last month.
The old instinct is to ask who let that happen and brace for an uncomfortable conversation.
But that's not always the right question. A budget disagreeing with reality
doesn't always mean someone did something wrong. It often means the plan discovered something it didn't know back in January.
