SHOULD YOU LEAVE AN EVENT EARLY?
It's 2:30. The event ends at 5. Sales are slow and you're thinking...
“I'm wasting my time. I'm packing up.”
I get it, a slow day is frustrating. But when you sign up for an event, you're committing to the entire event time, not just until you decide you've had enough.
Leaving early doesn't just affect your booth.
It interrupts the flow of the event. Customers see vendors packing up and assume things are winding down. Then another vendor starts packing... and another... and suddenly an event that's supposed to have two hours left looks like it's over.
And here's something I've learned from being on BOTH sides of that booth:
You never know what can happen before the event is actually over.
That last hour could bring a rush. Your best customer of the day could walk up 10 minutes before closing. I've seen slow days completely turn around at the end.
Now obviously, life happens. Illness, emergencies, unsafe weather, there are legitimate reasons someone may need to leave early.
Communicate with your organizer.
But leaving simply because sales are slow? That's different.
ORGANIZERS: If vendors are required to stay until the scheduled end time, put it in your vendor policies BEFORE they pay. Explain what qualifies as an acceptable early departure and what vendors should do if they need to leave. Don't wait until event day to suddenly enforce a rule vendors were never told about.
VENDORS: Read those policies. If you agree to stay until closing, plan to stay until closing.
Because sometimes...
the day isn't over until it's actually over.
