For SF Design Week , we’ve organized a panel talk on ECOLOGICAL FUTURES IN DESIGN for Wednesday June 3rd. This isn’t a talk about swapping one material for another. It’s about rethinking our relationship to matter itself — building interdependency with ecosystems, communities, and non-human life.

Urchinite™ is made from purple sea urchins harvested from Big River, Mendocino— at The Nature Conservancy’s active kelp restoration site. Every square foot removes up to 70 sqft of urchins from the ocean floor, directly enabling kelp forest recovery.

Scientists and divers are slowly reviving the underwater forests along California’s northern coast by planting kelp seedlings and removing purple sea urchins before they can overgraze the reefs. As a result, kelp cover this year is 10× higher than it was at its low point in 2023.
