Tips for parenting…!
I have parents said to me, “I am a bit concerned with my daughter’s weight or my son’s weight because s/he is eating too much junk foods.
And here’s the tip:
If you want to build healthy eating habits in your children, or adults in your family and even including yourself, then buy and stock up with only healthy foods and snacks at home.
This way, whenever everyone feels like eating or snacking, they only have healthy choices and that’s what they will eat.
It’s simply a matter of teaching ourselves to choose healthy foods and make healthy choices as a daily habit based on health-conscious decisions when shopping for foods.
For example, this family used to buy crispy chips and chocolate cookies and Sprite as their snack foods.
Now, the snacks are replaced with fresh fruits 🍎 🍌 and coconut 🌴 water instead of the sugary drinks 🥤
At first, it might take a little getting used to and if you don’t make a fuss about it it will transition smoothly…!
For example, don’t make it a focused talk. Just simply adding more healthy choices among your usual snacks and slowly buy less of the unhealthy foods and snacks, and keep replacing them with healthier choices and here’s the secret - make sure you enjoy the healthier choices whether you’re the mother, father, grandparents or whoever is doing the shopping and if there are requests for the usual snacks, just say it casually oh next time, but these are yummy too and healthier..! And keep the conversation light so that there is as little resistance in the adaptive process as possible.
This way, there’s no need for big talks, no chance for objections and transition is gradually becoming a natural change of habits.
And you will see that over time, you are “suddenly” all eating with healthier choices!
Real case: This family haven’t eaten bananas 🍌 for a long time, after the parent mentioning out loud to “herself” that bananas are good for your brain, let’s eat more bananas 🍌 from now on, then she also mentioned it “lightly” to the kids: “bananas are good for your brain 🧠 and helps with studying..!”
No lecturing, no serious talks. And simply replacing it with less chocolate cookies and other junk foods and at the same time, increasingly adding more of other fruits 🍎…
Within a short period of time, the whole family’s snacking habit was replaced with more fruits and vegetables…
She also did this by simply pointing out the goodness of each fruit and vegetable, for example, she simply cooked the purple carrots 🥕 and ate them herself and just shared how much she enjoyed eating them herself and showing a “happy-to-share” gesture that inspired everyone to join in and tried. Because you know, no one likes to miss out on good things!
And just like that, the family was now eating with healthier choices..!
This is leading by example.
If you’re showing to your family that you’re now adopting to new, better and healthier choices happily, they will naturally join you over time..!
