USDA currently projects a $4.50/bu. national season-average corn price for 2026/27. Local basis options are pushing that over $5 for sure.

📉 Bearish: Bigger yields, weaker exports, larger supplies & soft harvest basis.

🌱 2026 SOYBEAN PRICE OUTLOOK: What’s Ahead?

The soybean market is shaping up for an interesting 2026 crop year.

USDA’s August outlook currently projects:
📈 4.52 billion bushels of U.S. soybean production
🌾 52.7 bu./acre national yield
📦 320 million bushels of ending stocks
💰 $11.40/bu. season-average farm price

The story isn’t just about a big crop. U.S. soybean crush is projected at a strong 2.78 billion bushels, providing important domestic demand support.

So what could move prices from here?

⬆️ Bullish: Lower-than-expected yields, strong crush demand, stronger exports, or South American weather problems.

⬇️ Bearish: A bigger U.S. crop, rising carryout, weak export demand, or another large South American crop.

Bottom line: With USDA forecasting a large crop but strong domestic demand, 2026 soybean prices could remain highly sensitive to yield, exports, and South American production. Marketing opportunities may come quickly—having targets in place matters.

🌽 NC Farmers: August WASDE — What Matters for Your Marketing Plan

USDA’s August WASDE brought several important updates for row-crop producers:

🌽 Corn: USDA trimmed its yield forecast to 180.7 bu./acre, while stronger export demand helped pull projected ending stocks down to 1.7 billion bushels. The projected season-average farm price moved up 10¢ to $4.50/bu.

🫘 Soybeans: Production is now projected at 4.5 billion bushels as higher harvested acreage offsets a slightly lower yield forecast of 52.7 bu./acre. Ending stocks increased to 320 million bushels, and the projected farm price remains $11.40/bu.

🌾 Wheat: U.S. production and ending stocks were lowered, with the projected season-average farm price increasing 20¢ to $6.20/bu.

🌱 Cotton: USDA lowered U.S. production and ending stocks, while raising the projected season-average price 2¢ to 75¢/lb.

The takeaway for North Carolina growers: tighter corn supplies and stronger exports offer some support, while soybeans continue to face a relatively comfortable supply picture. With harvest approaching, now is a good time to review your breakevens, basis opportunities, storage capacity, and remaining 2026 marketing needs.

The WASDE is one piece of the puzzle—but knowing your farm’s numbers is what turns market information into a marketing decision.

🐛 NC Soybean Growers: Corn Earworm Flight Is Here

NC State Extension reports that corn earworm moth activity is running much higher than last year, with June trap catches about 3× greater than 2025. If your soybeans are flowering, now is the time to scout.

🌱 This week:
✔️ Check blooming fields twice weekly.
✔️ Look for eggs and small caterpillars in blooms and terminals.
✔️ Remember: High moth numbers don't always mean you'll need to spray—beneficial insects can eliminate many larvae before they become a problem.
✔️ Base treatment decisions on field scouting and economic thresholds.

A few minutes of scouting today can help protect yield and reduce unnecessary insecticide applications.
