Does anyone know why the people who need training the most put it off the longest?

I’ve got theories. But I am curious to hear your thoughts. And while we’re at it, if you’re in the “Yes, I know I need that, Cyndi!” space…

If you know your team needs support…
If you know regulations are changing…
If you know there are gaps in your knowledge…

At some point, you have to stop circling the decision and take action.
Training is not punishment. It’s preparation.
And in senior living, preparation matters.

Do you have that tendency to talk and talk and talk?

That’s fine, valid even. But take the time to stop and breathe. Yes, what you are saying is important, but what other people are saying matters. Remember:communication is a two-way street.

Listen to your teammates and clients. Like REALLY listen. Take time to digest and sit with what they have to say.

Who knows? They might give you that one winning idea or that one missing piece of the puzzle.

Some of the best networking I ever did started with discomfort. By putting myself in rooms where I knew nobody.

I went through awkward self-introductions and conversations I didn’t always feel confident initiating. But looking back, I am grateful I made the effort, took the opportunity to get outside my comfort zone, especially since I now can see — it’s exactly where most of my growth happened that brought me forward to other growth.

Because PROPER communication does not need you to sound polished. Just be curious enough to connect; that’s all you need - start with YOU!

Occupancy starts long before the tour. Even when they just view the photos and videos, they start asking themselves questions:

Do I trust these people? Do I feel heard here?
Do I feel safe here?

That’s why communication is not a “soft skill” in senior living. It’s leadership and marketing all in one. It’s the main thing that drives both the business and your network. That amazing brochure matters; that is very much true.

But connection matters more than you think! Invest in it while you can.

You might think training once is enough. Don’t make that mistake.

In my opinion, it’s always better to revisit and refresh it every once in a while. Even better, teach it again to someone new. Because nothing ever stays the same; things change and evolve over time.

That’s why ongoing training matters. Our Senior Living Learning Series exists to help you stay current without guessing.

Next session: Emergency Preparedness on May 14

Because preparation is not something you check off and never revisit again. If anything, it’s something you maintain.

Well… the previous week’s newsletter got some funny reactions. I shared a moment about saying “we” (It’s actually just me).

Some said, “This is SO funny.” One sweet client even sent condolences, which honestly made me laugh. A funny misunderstanding. But a TRULY welcome heartfelt connection!

The point is: it got people talking. Meaningful connection happened. So now I’m curious…

Do you say “we” when it’s just you?

Stop overthinking your training. Start doing it.

I see this all the time: People waiting and researching. All scrambling to try and “figure out the best option.”
Meanwhile, the training isn’t getting done. This is harmful because you need it, your team needs it. Most importantly, your residents depend on it. At some point, you have to stop circling the decision and take action.

Our Senior Living Learning Series started because of this exact problem!
Real topics. Real application. For all levels of staff.

Not every good idea is meant for you.
That’s just the truth of it.

You can have a good idea. An idea that works and an idea that makes sense on paper.
And, you can still not be the right person to carry it out.

Why? Because success in this industry is not just about the idea.
You must also consider commitment, stamina, and the willingness to stay in it when it gets hard.

So, before you move forward, take a moment.
Do you actually want this?
Do you have the energy for it?
Are you willing to commit long enough to see it through?

If the answer is yes… then the next step is to build your skill set, your knowledge base.
That’s where training comes in.

Most people get stuck thinking about what they already know and stressing over what they don’t. And sure, both matter. But they’re not the whole picture.

Change what you are asking into: what do I actually need to know to move forward?

It’s a very important question, but it's one that people miss.

The question gives you direction. And more than that, it’s about belief. You can learn anything, figure things out, and close the gaps.

But none of that happens if you don’t first believe you’re capable of getting there.

Sometimes, the biggest difference between staying stuck and making progress is simply telling yourself: I can do this.

I get a lot of questions from people wanting to enter the assisted living industry.
Questions like: “Is it a good idea?” or “Will it even work?”
To be fair, they are all good questions. But they shouldn’t be the first ones.

The first question should be either of these:

Does this idea give you energy and open up your thinking?
Does it mean something to you?

Because if the answer is no (and this is from experience), chances are, it won’t last - it won’t work.

The truth is that this industry does offer opportunity. A lot of it.
It rewards those who are willing to learn the business, stay the course-commitment, and build it over time.

So don’t just evaluate the idea. Evaluate yourself as well.

If you only show up to networking for referrals, you’re missing the point.

Not every room will hand you a direct opportunity. But that doesn’t mean it has no value.

Sometimes the value is the perspective. Sometimes it’s the connection that leads to the next connection. Most of the time, it’s simply getting outside your own box and seeing your business differently.

Growth doesn’t always show up in obvious ways.

Keep showing up.
Keep learning.
Keep listening.

You never know which room will give you the next piece of the puzzle.
