Operating within the structurally vulnerable Southeast Nigerian Sedimentary Basin, Oko
community has already lost approximately 4.5 square kilometers (nearly 50%) of its total
land area to aggressive, active gully systems.

The APEF deeper, regenerative framework based on a central thesis "The erosion we see is a reflection of the erosion within us."

Traditional civil engineering and rigid infrastructure (such as concrete drainage channels) treat only surface-level symptoms and routinely fail when implemented
without localized ecological knowledge.

By investigating the multi-generational, systemic, and cultural root causes of this crisis, APEF replaces passive climate
vulnerability with Education, Awareness, Community-led environmental restoration.

Formalization of Akaama Peoples Empowerment Foundation (APEF) marks a transition from a visionary concept into a structured, legal engine for change.

The thought of creating a world where we can regeneratively redefine what it truly means to be humans devoid of religious inclinations, race, color and ethnicity has birthed Akaama Peoples Empowerment Foundation APEF which has now become a Legal entity through this amazing being Ugba Esther Doo who provided the Legal backbone.

“Akaama is the Sacred Covenant Between Spirit, Land, and our Ancestors.

In the heart of the ancient lands lies Akaama, not just soil and water, but a living altar — where the spirits of the Land, Stewards, Custodians, and Ancestors walk hand-in-hand with the living systems of the world.

“My people embraced Western culture.” Emmanual’s voice hardens.

“What changed was the way they started looking at nature as something evil, that could be abandoned, and instead look forward to a place when they die – heaven… The idea of a place better than where we are on this planet that we’re living in, this is the reason why my people neglected nature… They see the trees as something evil, that should be destroyed, cut down, without planting more. My great-great-grandfather was more scientific before the entrance of this knowledge of a ‘better place’…

Even the indigenous people here don’t have this knowledge, because they’re still reconnecting back with themselves from what was lost because of the entrance of the colonial masters. They still don’t understand why our ancestors were planting those trees; for the ecological integrity of our land, to revitalize biodiversity.

…The colonial mindset affects the way people measure someone’s worth; value becomes the amount of wealth you accumulate. When you start talking about these things [the land, deities, regeneration, trees], they look at you like you’re crazy.”

A recent report confirmed the significant impact of a severe erosion incident that threatens the primary drainage channel behind the ancestral palace of the Oko community.

This critical situation necessitates the immediate mobilization of Oko's experienced Ancient wisdom keepers, Land Stewards, Custodians, elders and neighboring community leaders. Their time-honored wisdom and deep understanding of the natural environment and expertise in nature-based problem-solving are needed to develop immediate mitigation strategies for developing and implementing an effective response.

Furthermore, while pleading with concerned parties to be compassionate enough not to politicize the situation, a collaborative partnership with government authorities (ASNEWMAP) is essential to establish a regenerative sustainable, long-term solution to this persistent erosion challenge.
