There are some rescues that leave you broken and questioning the lack of empathy towards living creatures and the ultimate fate in our humanity.
On Sunday we got a call from a property manager whom had witnessed on her cameras a person sweeping an injured Barn owl out of her yard into the busy street of Belize city. Yes you heard it right, sweeping. Like some trash she was discarding.
He laid there, broken and bloody while, person after person walked passed him, taking photos. We reached out to every known contact we had in the city to find a rescuers as this was a case that needed addressing immediately.
We found one with Orion Omni-Pest Solutions While on a boat from San Pedro he called one of his coworkers who jumped on his bike and rushed to the scene. But it was still too late.
He died that day. Alone, scared and bleeding on the sidewalks of Belize City. Never to feed his mate again, or possibly his babies (it's nesting season) and never to clean up the rats and help with pest control. A beautiful soul lost.
At the end of the day. My heart was broken BUT the caller and the rescuers gave me hope that humanity is not all lost. There is still a sliver of hope for our Wildlife and wild places in those that go out of their way to be stewards for those who have no voice.
RIP little guy. Fly high.
If you ever come across an injured bird of prey please reach out as soon as possible to give them the best fighting chance. 615-0226
