Having conducted hundreds of interviews in my career, I have observed many things whilst being the interviewer or even sitting in a somewhat neutral seat.

Recruiters have many tips and yes whilst some may work for many, it does not necessarily mean it may work for all. Below are a few tips that I have put together that are applicable to most employment interviews.

Keep it simple, personal and safe always making the candidate feel a sense of ease and comfort.
I like to call it a first date or a screening. I get to know the candidate and the candidate gets to know about the organisation as well as the role I am interviewing for. A candidate in a relaxed atmosphere starts their discussion with ease and is able to get a good basic story or introduction across to me.

2. Never ever 'Grill' or 'Hammer' candidates

I am not there to catch out a candidate. Neither am I there to trick them by asking questions that don't matter. I am in search of a top calibre candidate and getting the best out of that candidate is important. Going in with a soft kind of style and expecting practical answers is what I aim for. I rarely work off an interview guide as I am very aware of the clients needs that I am hiring for as well as the role. This is clearly an important part of the recruitment process. Don't go into an interview if you don't properly understand the organisation or the role.

3. Listening, Yes listen to the candidate

We all have lots of expectations and yes moving jobs is huge so setting the clients expectations as well as candidate expectations is of the utmost importance. Listen to what the candidates expectations are. Is this in line with the role that you are hiring for? As a recruiter be honest, open and transparent at all times about the role. Job fit as well as organisational fit is crucial.

4. Recruiting is not just about making a hire or being paid a placement fee

For me it's more than that. Its about not compromising ever on the type of talent that I introduce or place at a client. A balance is what I like to find in any candidate. I would not
