In a trendy food market in Warsaw, Poland’s capital, two female engineers are discussing how hard it is to meet a nice, enlightened man. Paulina Nasilowska got a big pay rise a few years ago. Her boyfriend asked: “Did you have an affair with your boss?” He is now an ex-boyfriend.

Ms Nasilowska’s friend, Joanna Walczak, recalls a man she met on Tinder who revealed that he was a “red-pill” guy (a reference to “The Matrix”, a film, meaning someone who sees reality clearly. In the “manosphere”, a global online community of angry men, it means realising that men are oppressed.) He thought household chores and child care were women’s work, and that women could not be leaders. They didn’t have a second date.

🌸 Happy Women's Day, South Africa! 🌸

Today, we celebrate the incredible strength, resilience, and achievements of the women who have shaped our nation. From the fierce activists who fought for justice and equality during the struggle against apartheid to the trailblazing leaders, entrepreneurs, and artists who continue to inspire us today, South African women have left an indelible mark on history.

Women's Day holds a special place in our hearts as we remember the brave women who stood up against injustice on August 9, 1956. On that day, thousands of women from all walks of life marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against the discriminatory pass laws. Their united voices and unwavering determination ignited a spark of change that continues to burn brightly.

Today, we honor those who have come before us and those who stand beside us, working tirelessly to break barriers, shatter stereotypes, and uplift one another. Let's use this day to not only celebrate, but also to reflect on the work that still lies ahead. We must continue to strive for gender equality in all spheres of life – in the workplace, in education, in healthcare, and beyond.

Join the first global edition of Alibaba Netpreneur Masterclass from July 27 to August 24, 2023.

Hosted by Alibaba Global Initiatives, the program aims to equip business leaders with practical knowledge and insights to thrive in the digital economy. Inspiring African Women is an organisation who celebrates women in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics). We are launching our 16-week venture builing programme in May which is open to women entrepreneurs who have innovative female-led businesses.
