Doodling - who knew - one way to try to stay focused if you are in a meeting. Particularly if you are required to listen but not participate much. "When I was younger, I was often told off for this as it appeared 'rude' or 'not paying attention'." - Kate

In fact the opposite is true - doodling helps many people to stay focused by drawing the eye to the page (not looking at the room, at a screen or at a phone) and lets people listen without having to make eye contact. If you have a team member doodling, it may well be for these reasons. Take it as a compliment!

ND prevarication, procrastination and indecision can be a real challenge. Sometimes it is because I don't know which tools to use to make a good decision. Or all the options are too similar. Or I'm too scared to make a costly mistake.

One of the most useful pieces of theory I learned at the Graduate School of Business was 'locus of control' (thanks Kurt April). This theory helps you understand to what extent you make decisons because you believe you are in charge of your own life (internal locus of control) or to what extent you feel external factors or forces control your life (external locus of control). External factors may be luck, your horoscope, some kind of superstition or higher power. For a long time in my 20s, my locus of control was too externally facing.

Now, I finally see how to take better and healthier control of my life - asking for help being a key step. It doesn't always work. Earlier this year when faced with multiple car options, all the same price, all very similar - I must confess I went with a Honda (familiar, drove one for 12 years) and the fact the number plate started with ND. But fortunately this time, I got my father to do the sums!

Do you think that neurodivergent people, possibly undiagnosed, rely more on external factors to mitigate stress? Let me know!
- Kate

A favourite image that illustrates the fear that 'if you do something different for one student/employee, everyone will want special treatment'.

In practice, businesses should not make defensive decisions when considering productivity and business profit. The benefits outweight the risks. Consider how your policies and processes can be more inclusive - you can do things differently.

"Include Me came about from my growing understanding of neurodivergence - a term that includes Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, and Tourette's amongst others. With both my children assessed as neurodivergent, I started to look at my own experience and history - and following assessment found that I too am. AuDHD.

It is not an easy journey reframing your life experiences and looking after ND children but it has been a fantastic opportunity to think through the skills I have and how I can harness these to better the workplace for my children in the future. To that end, I became a volunteer with Neurodiversity in Business 18 months ago and have benefited hugely from this UK-based industry forum that aims to raise awareness and drive inclusion. I have loved meeting more ND people, working with global businesses and running awareness sessions and conferences.

Now it is time to bring this knowledge to South Africa, to change the world of work. As we say at NiB, the time for neuroinclusion is now." - Kate Wardle
