Common misconception vs reality

Common misconception : vicious killer

Reality: 200 million year old apex predator that is perfectly adapted to its environment. Able to hunt cooperatively in groups.

Absolutely placid amongst divers

Common misconception: stupid, prehistoric

Reality: ancient yes but stupid no - they have successfully evaded their largest and most dangerous predators, orcas, for quite some time, cleverly using man made structures like harbour walls to avoid detection and find sanctuary.

Common misconception: they have weird mismatched teeth

Reality: their dentition is actually beautifully specialised. The lower teeth are broad and comb-like, while the uppers are jagged. The lower jaw helps anchor large prey while the upper teeth cut as the shark moves its head

Common misconception: ugly and unevolved

Reality: boopy snoots

The best moments are never curated.

Yesterday, under a jetty, we came across some enormous chains disappearing into the seabed, holding the marina in place above. Nothing particularly dramatic — just steel, timber, water and sunlight.

The sun was cutting perfectly through the wooden slats - just so! In cape vernacular, throwing these incredible shafts of light through the water and illuminating the chain as it disappeared into the blue.

For a few moments, everything just lined up.

You can plan the dive. You can choose the camera, the lens, the location and the light.

But you can’t curate moments like this.

Sometimes the ocean just gives you something quietly beautiful.

Sunrise - It all starts with gravity - constant, dependable and quietly keeping the entire show on the road. Basically the opposite of Eskom 😂. If gravity went offline for even a second, missing sunrise would be the very least of our concerns.

Meanwhile, Earth is casually spinning at around 1,600 km/h while absolutely hurtling around the Sun at around 107,000 km/h. And what we call “sunrise” is simply our little patch of planet getting its 15 minutes of fame every morning.

All that gravity, ridiculous speed, orbital precision and cosmic engineering… and every morning we look up, sip our coffee and go, “Nice sunrise.” 😂 I really don’t think we give the Big Man enough credit!

Etz Chaim - Hebrew for the tree of life, the genesis of the bible and symbol of eternal life, healing and restored communion with God.

These timid animals resemble the Tree of Life, a gentle reminder of the life spoken into the world.

In the beauty woven through creation, we find everyday reminders of healing, restoration and the healing power of His grace.

The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations

This season we head out expecting what I assume to be “normal” sardine run encounter

Common dolphins usually build and hold bait balls. Bottlenose dolphins usually don’t. They hunt differently, scattering fish as they chase individuals.

But every now and then the ocean decides to rewrite the script.

This bottlenose pod not only created a bait ball, they held it in place long enough for us to witness something I’ve only rarely heard about - a bottlenose baitball. A reminder that no matter how much time you spend on the water, nature always has another surprise waiting.

That’s the gift of the ocean. Just when you think you’ve seen it all… it shows you something new
