So, what’s the big deal about monitor shades?

Less glare, a more immersive view, and a third point of contact to help steady the camera. Little things that make a big difference.

Designed and 3D printed by me at 3Square Digital Designs, these hoods can be made to fit any monitor on any housing. All I need is your setup for a day or two.

Just beneath Chapman’s Peak, one of Cape Town’s most underrated reefs hides in plain sight.

It’s only diveable a handful of days each year — and today was one of them.

Some days the anemones are out in full force. Other days, not so much. That’s part of what makes this reef special, the Almighty decides what we will see - we can never really tell.

Ask the animals, and they will teach you… or let the fish in the sea inform you Job 12:7-10

Sunk in 1902 after a collision with the Kaiser during a storm, all 23 crew members were lost in a matter of minutes. This historic and relatively unknown wreck is unremarkable except for the massive pile of anchors lying just off the bow.

Common misconception vs reality

Common misconception : vicious killer

Reality: 200 million year old apex predator that is perfectly adapted to its environment. Able to hunt cooperatively in groups.

Absolutely placid amongst divers

Common misconception: stupid, prehistoric

Reality: ancient yes but stupid no - they have successfully evaded their largest and most dangerous predators, orcas, for quite some time, cleverly using man made structures like harbour walls to avoid detection and find sanctuary.

Common misconception: they have weird mismatched teeth

Reality: their dentition is actually beautifully specialised. The lower teeth are broad and comb-like, while the uppers are jagged. The lower jaw helps anchor large prey while the upper teeth cut as the shark moves its head

Reality: boopy snoots

The best moments are never curated.

Yesterday, under a jetty, we came across some enormous chains disappearing into the seabed, holding the marina in place above. Nothing particularly dramatic — just steel, timber, water and sunlight.

The sun was cutting perfectly through the wooden slats - just so! In cape vernacular, throwing these incredible shafts of light through the water and illuminating the chain as it disappeared into the blue.

For a few moments, everything just lined up.

You can plan the dive. You can choose the camera, the lens, the location and the light.

But you can’t curate moments like this.

Sometimes the ocean just gives you something quietly beautiful.
