South Africa has the plans. But are the projects ready? 🇿🇦

A great infrastructure idea is not enough to attract funding.

Before investors, funders and contractors can move forward, a project needs the foundations behind the vision: a clear scope, credible costing, technical studies, approvals, a procurement plan and risks that have been properly understood.

That is the difference between a project that sounds promising and one that is ready to break ground.

President Cyril Ramaphosa put it simply:

> Plans must become prepared projects.
> Prepared projects must become investment.
> Investment must become construction.

South Africa does not only need more infrastructure plans.

It needs more projects that are ready to deliver reliable water, energy, transport, jobs and economic opportunity.

AEI Capital believes project preparation is where bankability begins.

Our country is in a mission of building a new economic map.

As global economic pressures shift, the country is actively diversifying its partnerships across Africa, Europe, and Asia. From deeper SADC integration and stronger regional trade to growing investment relationships with France and China, South Africa is positioning itself as a hub for resilient growth.

Within SADC, the focus is on increasing intra-regional trade, supporting greater local processing of critical minerals, and building stronger regional value chains. These steps are designed to ensure that Africa’s resources translate into long-term industrial strength and shared prosperity.

At the same time, French companies have pledged new investments across manufacturing, transport, energy, and science — signaling confidence in South Africa’s industrial future. China is backing major plans to expand energy generation and transmission infrastructure, helping to secure the country’s power supply and unlock new opportunities for growth.

Together, these moves reflect a broader strategy: diversify trade and investment, strengthen regional industries, and build a more resilient economy.

Our new economic map is not just about numbers — it’s about creating sustainable jobs, driving innovation, and ensuring that the country remains competitive in a rapidly changing global landscape.

Cape Town is turning water innovation into infrastructure resilience. 💧

The Cape Flats Aquifer Recharge Project is demonstrating how new approaches to water infrastructure can help strengthen the city’s long-term water security.

The project uses treatment and filtration infrastructure to recharge the Cape Flats Aquifer, supporting a more sustainable approach to managing one of the region’s most important resources.

Its wider value lies in the principle behind it: municipalities need infrastructure solutions that respond to immediate pressures while preparing for future demand, climate risks and urban growth.

But building the facility is only the beginning. Its impact will depend on effective operations, maintenance, technical expertise and long-term accountability.

At AEI Capital, we believe infrastructure delivers lasting value when innovation is matched by sound planning, appropriate financing and strong asset management.

Water security will require both new infrastructure and better ways of managing the infrastructure we already have.

The country has 81 Strategic Integrated Projects, made up of 263 individual projects, with a combined estimated value of approximately R1.99 trillion.

The pipeline includes projects that are already completed, under construction, moving through procurement and being prepared for investment.

Over the past 18 months, 37 projects worth approximately R69 billion have been completed, while a further 82 projects valued at about R502.7 billion are under construction.

Another 54 projects, worth approximately R206 billion, are in the documentation phase.

These developments show the scale of South Africa’s infrastructure opportunity — and the importance of collaboration between government, municipalities, investors, development finance institutions and project developers.

Infrastructure South Africa is supporting more than 26 projects, with an estimated capital value of approximately R148 billion, as they move towards becoming bankable and investment-ready.

The next step is turning prepared projects into funded projects, construction activity and infrastructure that works for communities.

AEI Capital believes strong partnerships and suitable funding solutions can help move South Africa’s infrastructure ambitions forward.

A project pipeline creates potential. Delivery creates impact.

A tender is never just a tender. 🇿🇦

In South Africa, public procurement accounts for an estimated 12% of GDP. This means every infrastructure contract can influence more than the project itself.

It can shape employment, local suppliers, skills development, construction standards and the quality of public assets delivered to communities.

The cheapest bid may seem like the best option, but price alone does not always represent value. Poor workmanship, delays and weak compliance can create higher costs over time.

A stronger procurement approach should consider whether a contractor can deliver quality work, meet safety and labour requirements, support skills development, comply with regulations and maintain performance throughout the asset’s lifecycle.

At AEI Capital, we believe the right delivery partners are essential to turning infrastructure plans into lasting value.

The right question: who can deliver quality, value and lasting impact?

🇿🇦South Africa’s plan to procure approximately 105 GW of new electricity-generation capacity by 2039 represents one of the country’s most significant infrastructure opportunities.

But projects of this scale require more than capital.

They also need reliable risk information and insurance planning to help investors, lenders, insurers and project owners understand how assets are performing and where potential problems may arise.

A stronger risk-data approach can bring together information on inspections, maintenance, condition monitoring, operational performance and outstanding recommendations.

This gives project stakeholders a clearer view of technical condition and risk controls throughout the infrastructure lifecycle.

Integrating risk management into project development from the start can help improve resilience, support better financing decisions and build confidence in long-term energy investment.

As South Africa expands its electricity system, the successful projects will need to be financially viable, technically sound and operationally prepared.

Capital can start a project. Risk intelligence can help keep it performing!

South Africa has placed infrastructure development at the centre of its year-long Chairship of the Southern African Development Community. 🇿🇦

President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for faster implementation of regional corridors, railways, ports, roads, energy and water projects.

The goal is to strengthen the connections that allow goods, services, people and energy to move more efficiently across the region.

Effective corridors can link landlocked countries to ports, reduce logistics costs, improve access to markets and support the development of regional value chains.

Energy is also a major priority. SADC aims to increase electricity access across the region to at least 85% by 2030, while improving regional electricity interconnection and investment in generation and transmission infrastructure.

The same urgency will be applied to water and sanitation infrastructure.

For Southern Africa to turn its mineral wealth, agricultural potential and renewable-energy resources into factories, businesses, exports and jobs, infrastructure delivery must move from strategy to implementation.

At AEI Capital, we believe regional infrastructure is a foundation for industrialisation, economic opportunity and long-term development.

What should SADC prioritise first: regional transport corridors, energy interconnection, water infrastructure or trade facilitation?

Infrastructure should build people as well as places. 🇿🇦

South Africa’s major infrastructure projects have the potential to do more than deliver new buildings, roads and facilities. They can also create practical skills, workplace experience and pathways into sustainable employment.

A partnership between the Construction Education and Training Authority and the V&A Waterfront is putting this idea into practice.

The V&A Waterfront’s planned R24 billion development programme is expected to generate approximately 27 000 construction-phase employment opportunities over the next 15 to 20 years.

The opportunity extends beyond construction. Young people can be prepared for careers in bricklaying, plumbing, electrical work, hospitality, transport and other services connected to the development.

For infrastructure investment to create lasting value, skills planning needs to happen alongside project planning. Training should be aligned with real employer demand and lead to meaningful workplace experience and employment.

The legacy of a major development should not only be measured by what is built, but also by the people it skills, the businesses it supports and the opportunities it creates.

How can infrastructure projects create a stronger future for young South Africans?

What makes investors confident enough to commit capital for the long term?

For businesses investing in South Africa, the answer increasingly comes down to three factors: policy certainty, reliable infrastructure and strong ex*****on.

Long-term investment decisions are not based only on today’s economic conditions. Companies are also considering whether electricity, water, transport networks and municipal services can support their operations for years to come.

Despite these challenges, investment continues in sectors with strong long-term potential, including energy, digital infrastructure, technology-enabled services and logistics.

Businesses are also prioritising projects that improve resilience — from alternative energy and water security to automation, asset replacement and stronger supply chains.

The message is clear: capital investment is not only a financial decision. It is a strategic decision shaped by risk, predictability and the ability to deliver.

At AEI Capital, we support a stronger infrastructure and investment environment by helping businesses and project stakeholders navigate the journey from opportunity to implementation. ✨

What would give you greater confidence to invest in South Africa: policy certainty, reliable infrastructure or improved project ex*****on?
