You've built a business. Yay!πŸ‘πŸ½

Now YOU'RE wearing all the hats: you're managing growth, keeping clients happy, watching cash flow, and making decisions that shape the future of your company.

Somewhere beneath all of that sits a few important questions that rarely get asked out loud:

Is our IT function actually secure?
Do the right people have access to the right systems?
Is our data being handled properly?
Would we know if something went wrong?
Do we have policies in place should something go wrong?
Are we compliant under South African law?

This is the anxiety felt by so many South African small business owners who can't answer these questions with confidence. Business owners who desperately want peace of mind, but instead remain stuck in a state of indefinite uncertainty...until the day an audit rolls around.

South Africa ranks among the most heavily targeted countries for cyber threats globally. According to Zoho's 2026 global security findings, 36% of South African organisations have experienced a cyberattack, representing one of the highest figures tracked in that benchmark. Furthermore, local industry research indicates that roughly half of South African small and medium enterprises (SMEs) lack a dedicated, in-house security team or adequate resources to actively detect and respond to digital threats.

The reality is that cyber-criminals rarely choose targets based on business size. Instead, they actively seek out weak access controls, poor data governance, unprotected devices, and critical gaps in compliance. A smaller business is not automatically hidden or safer from attack; your true level of exposure is defined by your digital footprint and the specific security controls you implement to protect it.

We have seen and heard it all, which is the exact reason why Team Ploon spent the last six months developing our Compliance Assessments. Built on strict regulatory guidelines and objective criteria, our IT Compliance Assessment strips away the mystery of IT governance to pinpoint your actual operational risks. Instead of leaving you with vague advice, it delivers a clear, actionable audit of your access controls, data governance, device security, and incident readiness so you can eliminate vulnerabilities before they turn into costly liabilities.

Your role is to grow your business with confidence. Ours is to ensure that your longevity is protected.

Ploon's virtual IT Compliance Assessment launches August 2026.

Mandela Day Adventures βš½πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦

Ploon sat down to brunch with Industrial Social Soccer League (ISSL) this past Saturday, our very first non-profit partnership, to celebrate something worth celebrating: their official NPC registration. We broke bread together, but more than that, we sat in the trenches of building a foundation, sharing the knowledge needed to carry this project forward the right way.

ISSL's mission is simple but it carries weight: to empower and uplift underprivileged youth in Heideveld through soccer training, educational support, and mentorship. Their vision is to build a safe space where young people can grow through the game, developing discipline, skills, and hope for a future that often feels out of reach. Heideveld carries its own scars, gang violence, unemployment, and a shortage of safe places for youth to simply be kids. ISSL shows up anyway. Free training led by local coaches, donated gear for kids who'd otherwise go without, life-skills workshops, community tournaments. This is real grassroots effort in action: ordinary people who refuse to turn a blind eye.

We thought it would take years before Ploon could stand shoulder to shoulder with NPOs and organisations doing real work on the ground. We imagined ourselves getting there eventually, once we'd grown enough, once we were "ready." Yet here we are, one year in, doing exactly what we set out to do.

Nothing in our past experience quite compares to where we are today. We have sat in boardrooms on the other side of the globe, leading teams and steering strategy, and while those adventures were incredible, they were merely a drop in the ocean. THIS is the ocean.

Ploon is immensely honoured to stand behind a cause like this one. We hope this partnership opens the door to more positivity and hope in our communities, for those who need it most, from those who never stopped believing they were worth showing up for.

The South African dilemma: AI is everywhere. Yet governance is still nowhere.

South Africa is adopting AI faster than most developed markets. 70% of adults have used an AI chatbot, up 25 percentage points since 2023. 27% now count as power users, relying on it daily for work.

SMMEs are riding that same wave, but a 2026 report on SA's AI data governance found a gap worth pausing on. Limited capacity, skills shortages and tight budgets push governance down the list, behind whatever's urgent today. The report also found almost no dedicated support helping smaller businesses get this right, plus real risks once tools go live: bias, and little to no evaluation after deployment.

A separate 2026 study on ethical AI adoption in SA SMEs found the same pattern. Businesses with stronger governance practices are simply better placed to use AI without creating new problems for themselves.

Simply put: small businesses in South Africa are moving on AI faster than their controls can keep up.

That gap right there is where your exposure lies. Not in the AI itself, but in what surrounds it. Who has access. What gets logged. What gets caught early instead of after the fact.

Ploon builds your AI governance and controls from day one instead of adding it as an afterthought once something has gone wrong. Frameworks and on-device controls that sit alongside your automation. Real-time safeguards protecting your data and your team while the tools do their job.

The businesses that will get somewhere in this race won't be the fastest movers. They'll be the ones who scaled without leaving the back door open. I cannot reiterate this enough.

If you need a guiding hand, or a "no BS" kind of chat, let's talk. 🌱

Foundations solid. Automation still a mystery. Sound familiar?

SMMEs know they need AI somewhere in the mix. But where to start, or whether they're even ready, is the part everyone seems to be having a hard time with currently.

At Ploon, the rule of thumb that we apply to every client as a first step is: "Identify what is, and what isn't working."

We audit your workflows and processes to see where time is actually going, not where you assume it's going. Once we know what's really happening on the ground, we find the gaps. Usually the same ones you've been patching with duct tape for the past year. We fix those first. Fast, simple, and honestly a bit satisfying.

Now that the necessary groundwork is out of the way, we focus on the exciting bit that comes thereafter - Optimisation. Stable operations is the foundation that AI enhanced workflows are built on. Ploon's workflows are designed to work alongside your people, allowing your team the capacity to focus on real growth.

One thing we won't do is bolt automation onto a broken process. A broken process automated is just a broken process moving faster, and we've seen enough businesses learn that the hard way. We stabilise first, remove the friction, then optimise. Always in that order.

The introduction of AI within the Ploon ecosystem didn't shrink our to-do list. It just stopped filling it with the wrong things. More time to find clients who actually fit, more time for the community work that keeps us grounded, and more time to just think without ten tabs open in my head.

The real value in saving time isn't the time itself. It's what you do with it.

If this is something you'd like to explore for yourself or your team, let's talk.
