Cybersecurity researchers are warning Gmail users to review their account security settings following reports of ongoing attacks targeting Google accounts.

According to a recent report, attackers are exploiting weaknesses in how people respond to security alerts and account checks, tricking users into revealing credentials or authorising malicious access to their accounts.

Once access is gained, attackers can:
• Read and send emails from the compromised account
• Reset passwords for other linked services
• Launch further phishing attacks using the victim’s identity

With email accounts often connected to banking, business platforms, and cloud storage, a compromised Gmail account can open the door to significant financial and data risks.

Steps you should take today:
✔ Run a Google Security Checkup
Review recent login activity, connected devices, and third-party app access.
✔ Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

A new scam targeting WhatsApp Web is making the rounds - and it can allow fraudsters to access your account without you even realising it.

The scam works by tricking users into scanning a malicious QR code that links a hacker’s device to their WhatsApp account. Once connected, scammers can impersonate you and send messages to your contacts requesting urgent payments or sensitive information.

Because the activity appears to come from your account, friends, family, or colleagues may trust the request - making the scam particularly dangerous.

What can scammers do if they gain access?
• Impersonate you and request money from contacts
• Access private conversations
• Potentially link fraudulent services to your mobile accounts

How to protect yourself:
✔ Check your linked devices
Go to WhatsApp Settings → Linked Devices and log out of anything unfamiliar.
✔ Enable App Lock
Add an extra layer of protection so WhatsApp can only be accessed with your device authentication.
✔ Activate Two-Step Verification
Set a 6-digit PIN to prevent unauthorised access even if someone gets hold of your login details.
