Theory builds understanding. Practical experience builds capability.

For years, Isphepho Group's work in recycling and waste management has shown us that skills become meaningful when people can apply them in real environments.

Through the CGCSA PRO Green Skills Programme, learners move beyond classroom learning and into hands-on activities that reflect the realities of the recycling value chain.

They work with recyclable materials, understand waste streams, practise safe operations, solve problems and learn through doing.
This practical approach reflects the training expertise Isphepho has developed through years of working directly in communities and within recycling operations.

This is what strong training looks like when learners are given the space to engage, question, participate and connect learning to their own experiences.

At Isphepho Group, years of facilitating waste management and environmental learning have shaped an approach that is practical, participatory and grounded in real community realities.

The CGCSA PRO Green Skills Training has allowed us to scale that experience into a structured programme. We thank CGCSA and Wholesale and Retail SETA for making this learning opportunity possible and for investing in skills development within the Umlazi Township community.

When we come together, we don’t just clean our streets, we create opportunities.

Isphepho Group joined the EThekwini Municipality Cleansing and Solid Waste (DSW) Unit, Mangosuthu University of Technology ’s Community Engagement and Development Directorate, the Umbelebele High School community and Ward 87 community members for a Spring Cleanup at Mango Close, Q Section, bringing environmental action, practical learning and community engagement together.

Students from the CGCSA Green Skills Training Programme gained hands-on experience, while community members learned about recycling opportunities through our Community Collectors Team (CCT), a programme that creates income opportunities through the collection of recyclable waste.

The day showed that cleaning up our communities can also open doors to livelihoods.

How can schools teach children to recycle?

Make it visible, practical and part of the school day, not just a lesson on a poster.

Safripol is a proud sponsor of the Isphepho schools recycling programme, which provides participating schools with a fully subsidised waste collection service, recycling infrastructure, CAPS-aligned curriculum content and training workshops for learners and staff.

In FY 2024, the programme reached 76,326 learners and collected 387 tonnes of post-consumer waste across 100 schools, including schools in Umlazi Township, Engonyameni Rural Community and eFolweni Rural Community.

Safripol also partnered with Plant the Seed to support the Zero Waste Toolkit, sponsoring 228 recycling bins for seven schools. The pilot collected 10 tonnes of recyclables and recovered just over one tonne of food waste.

An investment in skills is an investment in people, communities and the future.
Through the CGCSA PRO Green Skills Training Programme, made possible through the support of CGCSA and , young people and emerging entrepreneurs from Umlazi Township are being equipped with practical knowledge and skills for the green economy.

For Isphepho Group, this programme provides another opportunity to showcase training expertise built over many years of teaching and working within waste management, recycling, environmental education and community development.

Our experience has taught us that meaningful learning must connect knowledge to the realities people face in their communities and workplaces.
We are proud to work alongside partners who invest in people and create opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom.

🌊 World Oceans Day Beach Clean-Up 🌊

Isphepho Group is proud to have participated in today’s clean-up campaign at uShaka Beach in commemoration of World Oceans Day.

World Oceans Day serves as a reminder of the critical role oceans play in sustaining life on Earth. Oceans produce much of the oxygen we breathe, regulate our climate, support biodiversity, and provide food and livelihoods for millions of people worldwide. Protecting our oceans begins with simple actions such as reducing litter, recycling, and participating in environmental clean-up initiatives.

A heartfelt congratulations to SAAMBR, eThekwini Municipality, Mangosuthu University of Technology Waste Management Ambassadors, and all stakeholders who contributed to the success of today’s event. Together, we removed litter from the coastline and recovered recyclable materials, helping to create a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environment for future generations.

Every piece of waste removed from our beaches is one less piece that could harm marine life and pollute our oceans. Together, we are making a positive impact—one beach clean-up at a time.
