A major food recall linked to Shoprite Checkers has placed a supplier under serious scrutiny after harmful Listeria was found in products.

The potential fine? Over R1 million.

But the real impact goes beyond fines:

👉Consumer safety risks
👉Damage to brand reputation
👉Loss of business opportunities
👉Increased inspections and oversight

Food safety compliance isn’t something to address only when there’s a problem - it needs to be part of daily operations.

This is a reminder of how important it is to have strong systems in place, from hygiene controls to routine internal audits.

Food safety shouldn’t be an afterthought in product development.

When new food products are created without considering compliance requirements from the beginning, businesses often face costly adjustments later.

Food safety considerations should include:

✅Ingredient risk assessment
✅Allergen management
✅Labelling compliance
✅Process validation
✅HACCP integration

Building these elements into the development phase helps ensure the product is both market-ready and compliant.

At Koscibo, we support businesses through both food safety systems and new product development guidance.

Before the inspector arrives, do you know where your compliance gaps are?

Many businesses assume their systems are compliant until an external inspection highlights issues.

A GAP Audit helps identify weaknesses before they become costly problems.

Koscibo’s GAP Audits assess:

👉HACCP implementation
👉 Documentation systems
👉 Hygiene practices
👉 Monitoring records
👉 Staff training evidence

The goal is not just compliance - it’s confidence that your systems will hold up under scrutiny.

If your facility hasn’t been reviewed recently, a GAP Audit can provide valuable clarity.

It looked clean. It smelled clean. So, why did it fail? 🧴⚠️

In food safety, "visual clean" and "microbiologically safe" are two very different things. Looking back at real-world food safety incidents, we often see that the biggest risks aren't the messes you see - it's the ones you don't.

One of the most common lessons? The "High-Pressure Trap." Using high-pressure hoses in a facility can actually create aerosols that lift bacteria from the floor and land them right back onto your equipment.

To avoid these "cleaning fails," remember:

🧴 Scrubbing matters: You can’t sanitize what isn’t physically clean. Biofilms require mechanical action to break down.

🧴 The 360-degree view: Pathogens love ceilings, vents, and overhead pipes. If you aren't looking up, you're missing half the battle.

🧴 Verification is key: Use ATP swabs or environmental monitoring to prove your cleaning actually worked.

Don't let your sanitation routine become a "false sense of security."

Have you ever discovered a hidden "harborage site" in your facility that surprised you? Let's learn from each other in the comments.

Did you know that your maintenance team is actually one of your most important food safety defenses? 🛠️

It’s easy to think of maintenance as just "fixing what’s broken," but in a food facility, preventive upkeep is essential for hygiene. Old, worn-out equipment is much harder to clean and can hide bacteria in places you’d never expect.

A solid maintenance plan helps you:

✅ Avoid "foreign object" contamination from loose parts.
✅ Prevent leaks and drips from reaching your product.
✅ Ensure every machine surface remains smooth and easy to sanitize.

Remember: A quick fix today shouldn't create a food safety hazard tomorrow. Always ensure your maintenance team has a "clean-as-you-go" mindset!

Does your facility have a formal "handover" process between maintenance and sanitation? Share your best practices below!

Consistency is the secret ingredient to food safety. 🧼

In a busy food manufacturing environment, it’s easy to focus on production speed, but your daily sanitation schedule is what keeps your doors open and your customers safe. Every shift should end with a clear, documented cleaning routine that leaves no room for guesswork.

What should your facility be doing every single day?

🧼 Scrubbing and sanitizing all food-contact surfaces.

🧼 Sweeping and mopping floors to prevent slips and bacterial growth.

🧼 Clearing out floor drains (a common hiding spot for Listeria).

🧼 Properly storing cleaning chemicals and tools.

A clean facility is a productive facility. When workers operate in a tidy environment, morale increases and the "Culture of Food Safety" becomes a reality.

Does your facility have a daily checklist that everyone follows, or is it time for a refresh?
