🌿 A few moments and memories from Maloba. 🤎

Our time at Maloba Private Game Reserve has come to an end, and all our students have now completed their FGASA NQF2 practical assessments.

Looking back, these photos capture a little of everything along the way — learning in the field, growing in confidence, supporting one another and sharing moments in the bush that will stay with them long after the course ends. 🌾

Thank you, Maloba, for being part of their Kukama journey.

The final stretch — and still a few more memories to add to the collection. 🌿🤎

Our students are at Maloba Private Game Reserve, busy with preparation drives for their practical assessments. It’s a privilege to spend this time on a working reserve, putting their knowledge into practice and building confidence before their final assessments.

Between the prep drives and the nerves, moments like the morning’s stop beneath a camel thorn give us a chance to enjoy it all — learning, laughing, and sharing a little birthday celebration for Pieter along the way.

With assessments ahead and the end of the course so close, these moments together mean that little bit more. Soon everyone will head off on their own journey, taking a collection of bush memories and a piece of their Kukama family with them. 🌾

From the shopping list to the last plate served, our students hosted their own evening for six guests. 🌿

This was our Kukama hospitality exercise: a chance to put planning, organisation, teamwork and guest care into practice. The students planned a three-course menu, shopped and prepared the food, set the table and made sure guests with special dietary needs were catered for. Then they stepped into their roles as chefs, welcoming team, servers, runners, host and storyteller.

They had thought through all the details and had a plan. And then the rain arrived! 🌧️

The whole event had to move. Everyone jumped in, found their feet again and carried on looking after their guests. In many ways, that unexpected moment taught as much as all the preparation did.

Because being a field guide is about so much more than loving animals. You need to notice what people need, make them feel at home, work well with your team, share a story and stay calm enough to find Plan B when the bush has other ideas.

We are proud of the meal our students served, but even prouder of how they handled the evening together. To our six guests: thank you for being there, for embracing the change of plans and for helping make this such a valuable experience for our students. 🤎

🌧️ The bush doesn’t always go according to plan! 🐾

While out practicing for their assessments, the rain decided to join the game drive — leaving our guide slightly wetter than expected. 😄

A good reminder of just how unpredictable nature can be, and how field guiding is all about adapting, making a plan and enjoying every moment along the way.

For one night, our students traded their beds for a sleep-out under the stars on Olienhout Game Reserve. ✨

There’s something special about being in the bush after dark. You hear more, notice more, and learn to feel at home in a place that changes completely when the sun goes down.

And around the fire, between the stories, the laughter and the quiet moments, something else has changed too. The people who arrived at Kukama as acquaintances are now friends, making another memory together. 🔥🤎

One year. 31 students. A growing Kukama family. 🌿

Today marks one year since Kukama Wildlife College welcomed its first FGASA course students—an occasion to reflect on how much has grown from that first beginning.

Based on the edge of the Kalahari bushveld biome in the Northern Cape, Kukama is proud to be a FGASA Endorsed Delivery Partner, committed to training field guides to the high standards FGASA represents.

For founders Nikki and Christiaan, that commitment goes beyond a qualification. Their goal is for every student to leave with greater confidence, stronger interpersonal skills, a deeper sense of responsibility and the ability to connect meaningfully with people as well as the natural world.

Through practical bush experiences, teamwork and lessons in communication, hospitality and professionalism, students learn that guiding requires knowledge, care, character and the ability to think on their feet.

In just one year, 31 students have become part of the Kukama family. Each has brought their own story, contributed to the college’s journey and helped shape what Kukama is becoming.

“We want our students to leave with more than a qualification. We want them to grow as people—to understand themselves better, work well with others and carry that growth into whichever path they choose.”

Thank you to every student, trainer and supporter who has been part of this first year. Here’s to the next chapter, the next group around the fire and the many years of learning and growth ahead. 🌿

The wildlife industry is not always glamorous—and that is an important lesson too. 🌿

Our students recently visited the Kalahari Wildlife Project, where they learnt more about the hard work that happens behind the scenes in wildlife rescue, rehabilitation and release.

They did not only visit and observe—they rolled up their sleeves and assisted with a practical project. Because working in the wildlife industry means being willing to get involved, work hard and help wherever you are needed.

Every industry has exciting moments, but the reality is that success is built through the everyday jobs that still need to be done. It takes commitment, teamwork and a willingness to work—even when the task is not glamorous.

At Kukama, we want our students to experience the real industry and understand that no job is beneath you when you are working towards something meaningful.

Thank you to the Kalahari Wildlife Project for once again welcoming our students and allowing them to learn while making a contribution. 💚
