When you commission a bespoke garment from our studio, you are directly impacting the lives of real artisans & creatives. Our team is small, but that is why our lead-times are extended. This kind of construction deserves the luxury of time. Nothing is being mass-produced in a Chinese factory. Not one aspect of what we do can be described as ‘fast fashion’. We understand that there is a place for budget-friendly imported Shein wedding dresses, but respectfully, that place is not where we exist. Our clients understand the value of investing in a couture designer piece of artwork, ethically crafted to represent a bride as individual as every hand-sewn stitch. The influx of cheap Chinese wedding dresses may have made it more accessible for budget-conscious brides to get a dress for under R5k, but it has also affected many local designers & seamstresses negatively. Here at HLB, we would like to stay ethical, intentional and keep an industry alive that support real women in the community, with skills development and job creation. A seamstress doesn’t just fall out of a tree… it takes years of training, experience and opportunity to cultivate their skills. No one starts at the very top. Our local fashion industry has suffered wildly because of cheap imports, we are doing our part (however small) to fight back.
