A Tribute to Justin Lavers
It’s with a heavy heart that I heard about the passing of my good friend Justin Lavers this morning. We met each other many moons ago, when I first started out in the industry. We partied hard, had way too many tequilas, left media functions in the early hours of the morning and laughed until our tummies hurt.
I met him in the early years of Branded Marketing and we remained close friends until he moved to Durban a couple of years ago. He was always present at our Alphabet Soup functions and was a great supporter of the agency. He epitomised a true media salesman — someone who built meaningful relationships with clients, delivered exceptional service, negotiated with skill, and was deeply knowledgeable across all aspects of media.
Justin had numerous talents and was exceptionally well read. We spent many hours discussing politics, economics, and the ever-changing South African media landscape. His career was shaped by the remarkable teams he was part of — Ramsay Media, Caxton Magazines, New Media Publishing and others — ultimately leading him to Open Architecture Systems, where he worked closely with his brother and Devon.
He was a true friend to many — always supportive, deeply caring, and a wonderful listener. John and Nick were an integral part of his life, as were the many friends and colleagues who were fortunate enough to know him.
Justin had the biggest heart. He was generous, sensitive, and honest, with a quiet strength rooted in faith. He was also an exceptionally talented artist — complex, thoughtful, and often self-reflective. I was privileged to own three of his pieces, including a beautiful work of our two Jack Russells, Rosy and Granger, which still takes pride of place in our kitchen today.
We shared so many passions — art, media, food, books, charities, people, and a deep love for animals. His loyalty to his family and friends was unwavering. Ours was a friendship of ongoing conversations — ones that never truly ended, only paused.
Justin, no matter how much time or distance passed between us, we always picked up right where we left off, just picking up on the next chapter.
Today is a sad day. Heaven has gained an angel, and the memories of the past few decades will forever remain in my heart.
Rest peacefully, Justin. You will be deeply missed and always remembered 🌹💔😢
