Parcel tracking and tracing

When an Aerospeed courier picks up your item, we will attach a sticker with a number and a barcode to it. We will also give you a receipt for your item with this unique tracking number on it. This is the number used for scanning your item into the system and this number will remain the same whether a waybill is attached or not.
Every time the status of the item is updated, we will use this number. Customers are welcome to use services such as Fedex Tracking, this is not part of Fedex, it is an independent service and they receive tracking numbers from numerous couriers, including Fedex. This enables customers to track their items in real time on the internet. Depending on your chosen courier, you can track your item on the internet, or the company will send you a status update email, or it can even be tracked by the sms service on your phone.
The tracking system not only allows customers to see that their item gets delivered, but it is also crucial when things go wrong and your item is mislaid. The tracking number enables us to locate your item quickly and get it back on track, so to speak.

Did you know that courier parcels are not insured automatically -but insurance can be arranged should you require it?

Although sending items by courier already reassures the customer that due to the nature of the business, the customer’s item will be handled less and more carefully than ordinary mail, we do offer extra insurance, should the client request it.

If nothing else, insuring your item gives you peace of mind. On our side, insured items are handled with even more care – because if it’s insured it’s probably valuable to somebody, and we’d like to deliver the item into their hands just the way you sent it. Of course it’s also bad business for us, should something unthinkable happen to your item.

Taking out insurance with the courier, takes the risk out of the sender’s hands. The risk is now with the courier company and protects your item against theft and damage while in transit with the courier. Typically, insurance covers the full value of the goods. Some shippers do arrange with the courier company for a limited liability insurance package.

Some items are not covered by courier insurance, these items may be sent at own risk. Some items include laptops; jewellery; precious metals; money, computer discs, artwork and antiques. Towns with similar names and how to avoid delivery delays
There happen to be quite a few towns in different countries which share the same or similar names. For example: There is a Memphis in Egypt and a Memphis in Tennessee in the US. There is a Parys in the Free State and there is a Paris in France. Or did you mean Paris, Texas? Is your item going to Grenada or Granada?
Its best to use English when addressing international mail, even though addressing the item Parys, Frankryk is 100% correct, the chances of it actually getting to France or Texas are slim. It is vital to use the correct spelling of the town name, because Grenada and Granada are an ocean apart. It is also essential to include the country name in English. And even this is fraught with error, those sending items to South Africa are advised to write out – Republic of South Africa – instead of RSA or SA, since SA is also Saudi Arabia and RSA is also the Russian Space Agency. Abbreviations aren’t always helpful.
The most important information in the address is the postal code or the zip code, every country has its own system and this is very helpful when determining the destination. To avoid delays in delivery, customers should ensure that the name of the recipient is written clearly, the street number and name or box number, the town, the postal code and the country of destination.
Organisations which handle mail on a large scale such as the Postal Service of any country, use scanners which pick out the postal code. If there is no postal code, the mail is diverted to be sorted manually. Volumetric mass as opposed to actual mass
All courier companies transport goods with the weight of the item based on the volumetric mass, or the actual mass, whichever is heavier. This is because large, light parcels take up as much space on an aircraft as large heavy parcels. To get really technical, the pilot works out his fuel consumption based on the total weight of the aircraft – baggage and hold included. Thus the weight of courier parcels must be accurate.
In South Africa, both local and international couriers all work on the same formula for volumetric mass. To calculate the volumetric mass of your package, use this formula: Length (cm) X Width (cm) X Height (cm) ÷ 5000.

The higher mass, volumetric or actual will always be used to determine the cost of the shipment. The maximum dimensions allowed are 120 (cm) x 80 (cm) x 80 (cm) ÷ 5000. Because courier companies have consolidated the method used to calculate the cost of shipments into a global standard, it has forced shippers to pack their goods more efficiently, leaving little wasted space and also more recycling of materials such as cardboard and plastic. Shippers also use more sturdy boxes and cushion items more securely to prevent damage. This means a more eco-friendly industry on the whole.
