My Africa Day Reflection: 25 May 2025
Today, on Africa Day, we celebrate our shared heritage, our unity in diversity, and our enduring aspiration for a better, more just, and more dignified continent — "the Africa we want".
But let us speak truthfully: Africa is a continent of contrasts. Rich in resources but grappling with poverty. Overflowing with youthful energy but facing a crisis of unemployment. Full of leaders — yet too often still in search of leadership that truly serves the people.
We must confront these challenges — not with despair, but with resolve.
As Kwame Nkrumah reminded us, “The independence of Ghana is meaningless unless it is linked up with the total liberation of Africa.” Today, that liberation is no longer from colonialism, but from economic marginalisation, climate vulnerability, poor governance, and the underutilisation of our own talent.
Africa is home to the world’s youngest population, to rich natural wealth, and to an unstoppable entrepreneurial spirit. Across the continent, young Africans are not waiting for change — they are creating it. They are building tech start-ups, farming sustainably, educating communities, and demanding accountable leadership.
But if we are to realise the full potential of this energy, we must invest intentionally in entrepreneurship and environmental education.
These are not fringe concerns; they are the bedrock of a resilient, inclusive, and green African economy. Jobs, climate action, innovation, and community well-being all converge at this intersection.
We are reminded of President Thabo Mbeki’s powerful words in Parliament years ago: “I am an African. I owe my being to the hills and the valleys, the mountains and the glades...” His voice captured the soul of our continent — the deep connection between our identity and our land, between who we are and how we live.
On this Africa Day, let us honour that identity. Let us channel our challenges into courage, our potential into purpose. Let us build an Africa that is not only admired for its resources but respected for its values, its innovation, and its humanity.
Africa is not yet what it could be — but Africa is awakening.
HAPPY AFRICA fellow compatriots!
