EQ – Emotional Intelligence No10

EQ is the ability to work with people and through people to achieve win-win results.

Independence. EQ looks at Independence as a very important communication tool. As with other aspects of EQ the approach to independence is slightly different. We are all born totally dependent and then strive for a measure of independence. However, this is only the first step to becoming truly independent, which is a people skill that involves others. True independence only comes by passing through independence into inter-dependence this is the key to synergy.

One plus one equals three. Now while this might not sound mathematically sound, it is a basic communication tool. John on his own cannot push a motorcar, Peter on his own cannot push the motorcar. However, put the two together and the sum becomes bigger than the individual parts. This ability to harness the skills and abilities of others is a part of EQ that leads to person growth.

EQ – Emotional Intelligence No9

EQ is the ability to work with people and through people to achieve win-win results.

As we continue exploring emotional intelligence, we come to number 9 – Empathy. This is one of the most important people skills that one can develop to improve communication at all levels. So is Empathy the same as sympathy? Clearly not. Empathy is understanding the feelings of others as opposed to sympathy which is feeling the feelings of others. Sympathy is not healthy as it is a major cause of stress, as opposed to empathy which creates far better understanding of where the other person is coming from.

The North American Indians have an old saying: never judge another man until you have walked a mile in his moccasins. This means understanding the goals, dreams, frustrations and aspirations of the other person. Moving to the other side of the desk or counter and seeing the situation through the eyes of the other person.

EQ is the ability to work with people and through people to achieve win-win results.

The next ingredient in the EQ pie is trust. There are two sides to trust firstly being trustworthy and secondly trusting others. The EQ model takes a unique look at trust which many people find a little difficult to grasp, and that is: everyone can be trusted until proven otherwise. This is opposed to the traditional view of trust which says no one can be trusted. Trust allows us to communicate more assertively with others and helps to reduce conflict.

EQ – Emotional Intelligence No7

EQ is the ability to work with people and through people to achieve win-win results.

Understanding the differences in people.
People are different. Our ability to recognize these differences in people allows us to be able to communicate so much more effectively. Some people tend to be more factual, some more emotional. Some people are more job orientated while others are more people orientated. Some people are fast paced while others prefer a slower more relaxed pace.

Its obvious then that to communicate in a fast pace with a person who processes information more slowly will not be very effective. By understanding this difference and many others allows us to develop flexibility in our communication style and therefore tailor our communication specifically to the person. In other words, square pigs, square holes.

Now onto Emotional Energy. Our emotions are the source of power that drives our attitudes and behaviours. This can be seen as the petrol that drives the machine. By channelling positive emotions, we are able to create positive outcomes. Emotional states can be triggered either internally or externally. In other words, we can either create emotional states ourselves which is of course very empowering or have our emotional states controlled externally by people and events. EQ allows us to take charge of our own emotional states and empower ourselves accordingly.

In my previous posts we have already reviewed self-esteem and assertiveness. now onto emotional knowledge. This is a generic knowledge of what emotions are, how they work and how they effect our ability to communicate, connect with and engage with others. Understanding the power of emotions allows us to limit negative emotions such as anxiety, depression and anger and to more effectively use positive emotions such as excitement, enthusiasm and calm.

EQ – Emotional Intelligence No4

EQ is the ability to work with people and through people to achieve win-win results.
As mentioned in my previous post we will be looking at the ingredients that make up the EQ puzzle during the next few weeks.

My last post spoke about self – esteem the next ingredient is ASSERTIVNESS. Assertiveness is defined as expressing your needs, wants and feelings in a manner that is honest, open, appropriate and direct. Being assertive is avoiding both submissive and aggressive behaviour. Submissive behaviour results in an I lose- you win situation, aggressive behaviour results in a I win – you lose situation, whereas assertive behaviour creates a win-win result for both parties.
Assertiveness as with all the ingredients with EQ can be learned.

EQ is the ability to work with people and through people to achieve win-win results. During the next few weeks we will be looking at the various ingredients that make up EQ.

I scream, you scream we all scream for self-esteem. Self-esteem is a major part of any EQ training program this is the picture that we have of our selves which can be either positive or negative and effects our ability to communicate.

People with high self-esteem like and respect themselves while at the same time liking and respecting others. By improving our self-esteem, we create a strong foundation to better communication.
