Most African businesses don't know the U.S. government can finance them directly. Here's what's changing — and why it matters now.

Africa is already the largest regional portfolio of the U.S. Export-Import Bank (EXIM), representing over 28% of its total exposure. The U.S. is more financially committed to Africa than headlines suggest.

And the momentum is accelerating.

Project Vault — a new EXIM-led initiative launched in early 2026 — is explicitly focused on critical minerals supply chains, and Africa sits at the heart of that agenda. The $4.7B Mozambique LNG loan has moved. A new Sub-Saharan Africa Advisory Committee is seated with serious private sector representation across energy, finance, commodities, and trade.

But here's what most people miss:

EXIM doesn't just finance American exporters. It finances the buyers too.

African companies, government ministries, and public institutions purchasing American goods, technology, or services may qualify for direct U.S. government financing — loans and guarantees at competitive fixed rates, up to 18-year repayment terms for renewable energy, covering up to 100% of commercial and political risk, with no minimum transaction size.

If Chinese suppliers have seemed more accessible on pricing or financing terms, these tools were designed specifically to close that gap.

The challenge has never been the money. It's been the knowledge.
