MOHATO: A New Kid on the Block:

Harambee Global Records continues to churn out some of the rarest talent to ever come out of Lesotho. The latest find is Mohato Qhoai, a young man whose vocal resonance surpasses many seasoned musicians who have been on the scene for much longer.

He simply calls himself MOHATO and considers himself as a “well-cultured Mosotho who never forgets his roots.”

His music and the lyrics therein are intertwined with vocal chords that range from minor to major scale that he effortlessly bellows from his deep inner soul, accompanied by that typical Sotho-Afrobeat.

“I sing with great feeling and most of my songs have something to do with praising or praying to God and my ancestors. My talent was passed on to me by my ancestors and this is the reason why I use this name because I always want to be connected with my spirits,” says the 31 year-old singer.

MOHATO says his music is a natural calling and through his songs he sings about how the world has evolved to become the bad place that it is today as most people have dumped their traditional ways of living to follow Western culture.

He says even politicians and other leaders have left the teachings of great leaders like King Moshoeshoe I for their own selfish means.
“In the end, the whole nation collapses while the younger generation remain clueless on what the future holds. Unless someone addresses this issue our nation will continue confused and more misery will come our way,” he says philosophically.

While most younger musicians are pre-occupied with “amapiano” and other beats from South Africa and elsewhere, MOHATO says he will stick to his traditional Basotho style “but with an international appeal.”

He is currently working on releasing an EP soon but already videos of some of his songs have been shot by the Harambee media team. A sneak preview of Thapelo ft. Taylor Bruise and rapper Alex Mafelesi proves to show that a prayerful song doesn’t need to be that boring to capture the audience’s attention. Other songs to look out for on this EP are ‘Mabelebele’, Moea, ‘Toro ea Phato’, the title track, and ‘Khetsi ea Limo’.
‘Mabelebele’ is a love song that seems to have some personal connotations about the musician’s love affair with a girl of his dreams. On the other hand, ‘Khetsi ea Limo’ is about some traditional stories that were told by the elders when he was young.
