💡 TIPS WITH FORGE | How to reduce peak electricity demand

Does your business switch everything on at once? Machinery, air conditioning, pumps and water heating running together can create a high peak in electricity demand. Depending on your tariff, that peak could also increase your bill.

Peak demand is the highest level of power your business draws during a measured period. Here are a few practical ways to bring it down:

⚡ Stagger equipment start-up. Where operations allow, bring equipment online in stages and avoid running all high-power equipment together.

🕒 Spread out energy-intensive tasks. Schedule pumping, heating or charging at different times to reduce overlap.

🌡️ Manage heating and cooling. Use timers and sensible temperature settings so systems run when needed.

🔌 Switch off idle equipment. Check what stays on during breaks, between shifts and after hours.

📊 Measure before making changes. Monitoring helps identify when demand peaks and which activities contribute most.

Moving tasks to cheaper tariff periods may reduce energy costs, but reducing peak demand means managing how much equipment runs at the same time.

BEHIND THE PROCESS | What Forge checks before commissioning

An installation can look complete without being ready for operation. Before commissioning begins, the right checks help establish whether the system is ready for controlled testing and start-up. At Forge Projects, this preparation covers:

📐 Design verification: Checking the installation against the approved design, equipment specifications and intended operating requirements.

🛡️ Protection: Reviewing earthing, protective devices and isolation arrangements to help safeguard people and equipment.

🔎 Inspection and testing: Inspecting connections and components, completing the required pre-commissioning tests and addressing issues before progressing.

⚙️ Settings: Verifying relevant protection, drive and control settings against the design and equipment requirements.

📋 Documentation: Checking that drawings, test records and equipment information are available and reflect the installation.

🤝 Handover preparation: Planning the operating guidance, maintenance information and records the client will need once commissioning is complete.

Commissioning then verifies how the system performs, not simply whether it switches on.

From preparation through to final handover, a structured process helps identify problems early, reduce avoidable rework and support reliable operation.

BATTERY STORAGE | Five questions before building the business case

The battery-storage conversation often begins with: “Does our business need batteries?”

But the better question is: “What do we need the battery to achieve?”

Depending on your business’s needs, battery storage may help:

🔋 Keep critical operations running
📉 Reduce peak electricity demand
⏱️ Shift energy use away from expensive tariff periods
☀️ Store surplus solar energy for later use
📈 Support future energy requirements

However, the right solution cannot be determined by price or advertised battery capacity alone.

A credible business case must consider your load profile, tariff exposure, operational priorities, usable battery capacity and how the system will integrate with solar, generators, grid supply and existing electrical infrastructure.

It should also account for expected savings, downtime risk, maintenance, system lifespan and future replacement requirements.

Swipe through the carousel for five important questions to ask before making the investment.

Which outcome would drive your battery-storage business case?

ENERGY-SAVING TIP | Give your energy use a spring reset

As the seasons change, it is a good time to check whether equipment is still operating according to the schedules and settings your property actually needs.

Small energy wasters can add up when they run unnoticed day after day.

Use this spring checklist:

⏱️ Review timers: Check that timers still match operating hours, daylight conditions and seasonal requirements.

💡 Adjust outdoor lighting: Lights may be switching on too early or remaining on long after they are needed.

🚿 Check geyser schedules: Review heating times against actual hot-water use instead of allowing geysers to run unnecessarily.

🔌 Reduce standby loads: Appliances, chargers, screens and office equipment may continue drawing power when not in use.

⚙️ Review equipment controls: Fans, pumps, air-conditioning and other systems should not operate at full capacity when demand is low.

The first step towards reducing waste is knowing when and where energy is being used. Timers, monitoring and properly configured controls make it easier to match energy consumption to actual demand.

Small adjustments can create meaningful savings when they are applied consistently.

Save this checklist for your spring energy reset.

ENGINEERING MINUTE | Why electric motors fail

Electric motors keep pumps, fans, conveyors, compressors and machinery running, but several electrical, mechanical and environmental conditions can shorten their operating life.

Motor failure is rarely “just one of those things”. Correct motor selection, suitable protection, proper installation and planned maintenance can reduce unnecessary breakdowns and extend equipment life.

Noticing unusual noise, heat, vibration, odours or repeated trips? Arrange a professional assessment before the problem leads to unplanned downtime.

WORLD WATER WEEK | Electricity moves water 💧⚡

Every time water reaches a tap, fills a reservoir, or passes through a treatment plant, electrical systems work behind the scenes.

Pumps move water where it needs to go. Drives control how efficiently those pumps operate. Sensors measure flow, pressure and water levels. Control systems coordinate the process, while monitoring helps identify leaks, equipment problems and unnecessary energy use.

When these systems are inefficient, the consequences affect both resources: more electricity is consumed, water can be wasted, and unreliable equipment can disrupt supply.

Smarter electrical infrastructure helps water systems operate more efficiently, respond to changing demand and reduce avoidable losses.

Because protecting water also means paying attention to the energy systems that keep it moving.

Follow Forge Projects for more insights into the engineering behind essential infrastructure.

MYTH VS FACT | Does a CoC mean an electrical installation will stay safe forever? ⚡

❌ MYTH: Once a Certificate of Compliance has been issued, the installation is permanently safe and compliant.

✅ FACT: A CoC records that an electrical installation complied with the applicable requirements at the time it was inspected and tested.

Its condition can change afterwards due to:

⚡ Unauthorised alterations or additions
⚡ New equipment or circuits
⚡ Damaged wiring or components
⚡ General wear and deterioration
⚡ Environmental exposure
⚡ Poor maintenance or unqualified electrical work

A CoC is an important compliance document, but it does not guarantee that an installation will remain unchanged or free from future faults.

If alterations are made or warning signs appear, the installation may require further inspection, testing and, where applicable, updated certification.

Share this post to help others understand what a CoC does—and does not—confirm.

SERVICE SPOTLIGHT | Power Quality Assessment

Is poor power quality quietly affecting your operations?

Electrical problems do not always present as a complete power failure. They may appear as recurring circuit trips, overheating equipment, inconsistent machinery performance or unexplained downtime, all of which can disrupt productivity and increase operating costs.

Warning signs that your electrical environment may need assessment include:

⚠️ Repeated or unexplained circuit trips
⚠️ Motors, cables or equipment running unusually hot
⚠️ Flickering or dimming lights
⚠️ Machinery behaving inconsistently
⚠️ Sensitive electronics restarting or malfunctioning
⚠️ Recurring production interruptions

Forge Projects provides professional electrical testing and assessment to help businesses investigate irregular system behaviour and better understand the condition and performance of their electrical infrastructure.

Because these symptoms can have several possible causes, proper assessment is essential before repairs, replacements or upgrades are recommended.
