Water Engineer

Vacancy objective:
The primary objective of this position is to manage TSGRO’s Bulk Water Supply Service that provisions irrigation water to smallholder sugarcane farmers in Nkomazi (8000 ha). The focus of this programme is to repair, operate, maintain and secure the grower’s bulk irrigation infrastructure.
Reporting structure:
Reporting to the CEO, the successful candidate will be expected to carry out the following responsibilities:
Responsibilities:
• Programme management of the Bulk Water Supply Service;
• Implementation of whole asset lifecycle management within the budget;
• Contract management of Bulk Water Supply service providers and consultants;
• Project management of irrigation revitalization and development projects in terms of cost, time, quality and performance;
• Project management of the rectification of infield irrigation practices;
• Evaluation and improvement of bulk irrigation infrastructure;
• Evaluation and improvement of irrigation scheduling techniques;
• Evaluation of the performance of irrigation systems against design standards;
• Evaluation of irrigation designs, pump station designs and pipe lines according to SABI norms and standards;
• Investigation and adoption of technology in irrigation, including automation and energy management;
• Management of call center for fault reporting;
• Management of information systems, including remote sensing and telemetry, to drive irrigation efficiency improvements;
• Promotion of safety, health and environmental standards;
• Stakeholder engagement with growers, grower representative structures, Government, water authorities and internal stakeholders.
Requirements:
• B. Eng. or B.Tech (Civil / Agricultural / Mechanical);
• Five (5) years operational management experience in water or irrigation environment;
• Five (5) to Ten (10) years contract management experience in engineering environment;
• Five (5) years project management experience in engineering environment;
• Computer literacy in MS Office and experience in operating/programming GIS system;
• Advanced strategic leadership skills and ability to articulate information and convince people;
• Ability to explore possibilities, take action and resolve problems within and across divisions;
• To be considered for appointment the candidate must be a South African citizen, and
• Fluency in isiZulu or siSwati would be an added advantage.
