Addressing Bitter Pit in Apples: What Does the Data Show?

Bitter pit remains a significant challenge for apple growers, particularly when fruit quality is evaluated after harvest.

At Panorama Golden's in Paarl, bitter pit incidence was evaluated over four consecutive seasons (2010–2013), comparing a standard calcium programme with the same programme supplemented with C4L/CultiGrow/CropBioLife.

The results showed:
•⁠ ⁠Lower bitter pit incidence in all four seasons, with differences ranging from approximately 11% to 55% compared with the standard calcium programme.
•⁠ ⁠In separate apple trials conducted in 2020, fruit calcium content was also evaluated. Apples treated with the standard programme supplemented with C4L/CultiGrow/CropBioLife recorded 136% higher calcium content than those receiving the standard programme alone.

Meet Hein Ge**er

Hein is a Director at BioRevolution and has been part of the team for the past three years, supporting growth and innovation across the business.

His role is really about connecting the science behind our products with what growers actually need in the field. From product development, technical strategy and R&D to marketing, positioning and distributor support, Hein helps turn innovative solutions into practical tools that add value where it matters.

What excites him most about BioRevolution is seeing that value translate into real results.

For Hein, having the scientific research and years of field experience behind our products means we can have confidence in what we take to growers. It also means helping crops perform in an increasingly challenging production environment, while supporting growers in farming more profitably and sustainably.

One thing Hein particularly enjoys about BioRevolution is the team behind it. Even the board meetings make his list of memorable work moments, with plenty of ideas, opinions, debate and a few laughs around the table.

Outside of agriculture, Hein enjoys learning about human psychology and reads extensively on the subject. He’s also a keen mountain biker, enjoys Hyrox and, if something around the house, car or electrical system needs fixing, chances are he’ll have a go at it himself.

And his fruit of choice?
Mango.

23% higher harvested weight in a potato trial in Michigan.

But total harvested weight was only part of the story.

During a 2025 trial in Albion, Michigan, C4L was evaluated on Snowden potatoes, comparing the grower's standard programme with the same programme supplemented with C4L.

The results showed:
23% higher total harvested weight, increasing from 10.07 kg to 12.43 kg per plot.
13.6% more harvested tubers per plot.
48% more harvested weight in the 70–80 mm size class.

Importantly, the differences in total harvested weight and the 70–80 mm size class were statistically significant in this trial.

For us, it's about measuring where C4L makes a difference, understanding what that means for the grower and ultimately adding value where it matters most.

Are your table grapes at pea size? Don’t miss the next C4L window.

We’ve moved from 20–30 cm shoot length, through flowering and cap fall, and for many vineyards the next important stage is now approaching: pea size.

At this stage, the focus shifts to supporting berry size, uniformity and quality development, with the next C4L/CultiGrow/CropBioLife application positioned at pea size at 500 mL/ha.

Quality is not something that starts at the end of the season. It is built much earlier, through the way the crop is supported as it develops.
Across our table grape trials, we have repeatedly seen that treated fruit can be better positioned in terms of quality-related characteristics compared with the untreated control. That is why we place so much emphasis on getting the timing right throughout the programme, rather than trying to address quality only at the end.

Citrus orchards are fast approaching physiological fruit drop, so don’t miss the next C4L/CultiGrow/CropBioLife window.

The season is well underway, and so is the C4L citrus programme.

The next application is 7–14 days before physiological fruit drop begins, supporting fruit retention during this important stage of fruit development.

We’ve seen the value of getting this specific timing right in our field trials, with improved fruit retention observed following C4L/CultiGrow/CropBioLife applications. In a recent Clementine trial, C4L increased the average number of fruit per tree from 22.4 to 33.2, an increase of 48%.
