With over 20 years of experience engaging with Deaf culture and more than 6 years as a professional interpreter, my mission is simple: to bridge communication gaps and create spaces where everyone feels seen, heard, and understood. Through my work a

Sometimes, all it takes is one friendship to change the direction of a life.

For me, it was a friend who introduced me to South African Sign Language. I never imagined that one friendship would open the door to the Deaf community, inspire the creation of Deafways, and lead me to a purpose I cherish every single day.

Friendship breaks down barriers, builds understanding, and reminds us that our differences can become our greatest strengths. It teaches us to listen, learn, and grow together.

Today, I celebrate the friends who have shaped my journey and the incredible Deaf community who have welcomed me with open hearts. Thank you for allowing me to walk alongside you.

Never underestimate the impact of a genuine friendship. It might just change a life. 🤟💙

Fact: Deafness and the ability to speak are not the same thing.

Many Deaf people can and do speak. Others choose to communicate primarily through South African Sign Language (SASL), while some use a combination of speech, sign language, lip-reading, or assistive technology.

Every Deaf person’s communication journey is unique, and there is no single “right” way to communicate.

Instead of making assumptions, ask respectfully how someone prefers to communicate. That simple question can make all the difference in creating an inclusive and welcoming environment. đź’™

Myth: All Deaf people can read lips.

Fact: Lip-reading is a skill—not a guarantee.

Only a small portion of spoken language can be understood by watching someone’s lips. Many words look the same on the lips, and understanding depends on lighting, facial hair, accents, speaking speed, and whether the speaker is facing the person.

Many Deaf people prefer to communicate in South African Sign Language (SASL) because it is their natural language. Others may use lip-reading, speech, hearing technology, or a combination of communication methods.

The key is simple: never assume—always ask how someone prefers to communicate. 💙

Respecting communication preferences is one of the easiest ways to make our communities more accessible and inclusive.

Being a sign language interpreter involves far more than simply knowing signs.

Professional interpreters are fluent in both a spoken language and a sign language. They also have a deep understanding of Deaf culture, ethics, communication styles, and the skills needed to accurately interpret meaning—not just words.

Every assignment requires concentration, preparation, cultural awareness, and the ability to think quickly while remaining neutral and professional.

Myth: Sign language is the same all over the world.
Fact: Just like spoken languages, sign languages are unique to different countries and communities.
South Africa has South African Sign Language (SASL), which has its own grammar, vocabulary, and cultural identity. Other countries have their own sign languages too, such as American Sign Language (ASL), British Sign Language (BSL), and Australian Sign Language (Auslan). They are distinct languages—not simply signed versions of English.
Learning about these differences helps us appreciate the rich diversity of the Deaf community and reminds us that communication is about understanding, respect, and inclusion.
