17 May 2026: Mhlabatini Firebreak

Firebreaks keep the peace between neighbours, especially during our dry winters. Also helps our treasurers sleep better without insurance worries!

Bring: Chainsaw and/or Brushcutter if you have, gloves, rakes (metal fan shaped are best), loppers, pangas, sunglasses, lunch and a towel + a sense of good humour.

We should be done by lunch to explore / swim if you are keen to brave the chilly waters.

Our goal: make the embankment down to the river less slippery and slidy.

Meet leader: Petrus

The EP Section presented an outstanding National Camp as part of their 75th celebration.

Hosted by Bucklands Guest Farm near Steytlerville in the Baviaans region of the Eastern Cape, the farm and surrounds offered something for everyone - Cockscomb, Mac and Stoltzberg peaks to conquer, Pinnacle for rock climbers, various day and overnight hikes, several botanists, bird experts and our own entomolygist Michael Stiller.

The first night a magnificent thunderstorm added to the good rains of recent months. Veld flowers abounded. Overall the weather was perfect.

Knowledgeable meet leaders ensured meets were run as advertised. And of course the week ended with a true Karoo spit braai in style held in the rondedak barn!

5 Mag members (including Christa who has semigrated) attended.

Next year will be Cape Town's turn. They have no easy task to maintain the standard set by EP.

Thank you and congratulations Gaye Hosking and team!

All nests are monitored for activity by provincial specialists. Some nests have motion sensitive cameras. If there is no activity by end June, these may open for climbing.
There are many Climbers and only a few pairs of Eagles. Remember we are in their space.
ALSO NOTE: Bolting anywhere on these Crags is not permitted during this period.
If you notice unfamiliar Eagle activity, please send a note: [email protected].
It is always a treat to be greeted with their curious Eagle eyes!

Kayleigh Murray | PhD Candidate in Conservation Genetics | Conservation Horticulturalist

The Magaliesberg is home to unique and endemic plant species, many now listed as rare on the South African Red List and threatened by poaching, climate change, and invasive species.

Join us on Tuesday, 12 May 19:00 at the clubhouse for a talk by Kayleigh Murray (UP & Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, UK), introducing a Richard Watmough-funded project to establish a legal, diverse conservation collection of four key Magaliesberg plant species.

Learn about the focus species and best practices for building and maintaining conservation collections. With 7 years’ experience at Stellenbosch University Botanical Gardens, Kayleigh brings valuable insight into this important aspect of environmental stewardship.

We need your help!

Maretlwane is facing a mining prospecting application which if granted will likely lead to a mining license. It would completely change everything we love about Maretlwane.
